Welcome to Log Reader for SQL Server

The Log Reader for SQL Server is a SQL data-auditing and data-recovery tool that analyzes the SQL Server transaction log to display information on data and object changes.

Licensing

If you update default license (15 days) with a new license by selecting Help | Registration from the Console menu, Log Reader for SQL Server updates the license for the user running the Console only. For other users, the default license is used.

Workaroud:

Use Registration form to update the license.

When using the Find feature, Log Reader for SQL Server searches only through record values.

Log Reader for SQL Server does not support Find feature for BLOB values.

Server Components installation

Sometimes when installing Log Reader Server Components to a remote host, a "Write to file failed" error occurs.

Workaroud:

  1. Locate xp_QuestLogReader.dll on the host where the application is installed.

  2. Copy xp_QuestLogReader.dll to ther \BIN folder of the SQL Server instance where you want to install Log Reader  Server Components

Tip: You can use the EXEC xp_instance_regread N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', N'SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Setup', N'SQLPath' command to define your server location.

  1. Run the following commands on the SQL Server instance:

EXEC sp_addextendedproc 'xp_qlr_version', 'xp_QuestLogReader.dll'

EXEC sp_addextendedproc 'xp_qlr_logfile', 'xp_QuestLogReader.dll'

EXEC sp_addextendedproc 'xp_qlr_loginfo', 'xp_QuestLogReader.dll'

EXEC sp_addextendedproc 'xp_qlr_logread', 'xp_QuestLogReader.dll'

Script Generation

CONTENT option for XML columns is not supported.

FILEGROUP and TEXTIMAGE_ON options are not supported (the script is not generated for the FILEGROUP and TEXTIMAGE_ON).

For SQL Server 2005, partition scheme is also not supported.

INSERT, UPDATE, or DROP commands for columns with BLOB values of 8000 bytes and more are detected, but script is not generated.

When you use check log file changes option, Log Reader for SQL Server may reconstruct newly read log records incorrectly.

Workaround:

Click Refresh on the toolbar or use the Read Log wizard.

Upgrade and Compatibility

Log Reader for SQL Server v1.2 does not support automatic upgrade from version to version. You should manually uninstall the current version of Log Reader for SQL Server from your machine before installing a new one.

 

Trial version of Log Reader for SQL Server v1.2 has embedded default license (sysdate + 15 days).

 

Commercial version of Log Reader for SQL Server v1.2 requires:

 

To upgrade from trial version of Log Reader for SQL Server to commercial version:

  1. Remove the trial version of Log Reader for SQL Server.
  2. Install LiteSpeed for SQL Server.
  3. Register LiteSpeed for SQL Server with Professional Enterprise license.
  4. Install commercial version of Log Reader for SQL Server.
 


System Requirements

Before installing Log Reader for SQL Server, ensure your system meets the following minimum hardware and software requirements:

Platform

32 bit or 64 bit Pentium III (Pentium IV recommended) or compatible processor.

Memory Minimum 512MB.
Hard Disk Space 100MB. Database files extracted from a backup require additional storage space depending on the size of the database.
Operating System

Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional SP1 or 2,

Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional - 64 bit Edition,

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP4,

Microsoft Windows 2003

Microsoft Windows 2003 - 64 bit Edition, or

Windows Vista.

Supported Databases

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP4 - 32 bit,

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 64 bit,

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 RTM, SP1 or SP2 - 32 bit,

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 RTM, SP1 or SP2 - 64 bit.

Additional Software .NET Framework 2.0.

 


Global Operations

This version was not tested for international operations. Only U.S. English configurations of this product and U.S. English datasets are fully supported. Support for non-ASCII characters and/or non-English configurations may work appropriately, but these configurations have not been tested and this product should be used with caution in these environments.

Installation Instructions

  1. Run the LogReader installation file and follow instructions of the installation wizard.
  2. On the User information screen, personalize your installation.
  3. On the destination folder screen, select where to install Log Reader for SQL Server.
  4. On the Ready to Install the Application screen, click Next to install Log Reader for SQL Server.
  5. Click finish to complete the installation.
