Quest® Recovery Manager for Active Directory Forest Edition
Version 7.8.0
Release Notes
April 30, 2008
Welcome to Quest Recovery Manager for Active Directory Forest Edition
Resolved Issues and Enhancements
Recovery Manager for Active Directory Forest Edition is designed to perform the restoration of an Active Directory forest from one centralized location, using backups created with Recovery Manager, eliminating the need to manually interface with each domain controller separately saving a significant amount of time and effort.
Recovery Manager for Active Directory Forest Edition simplifies and automates the process of Active Directory forest recovery. Recovery Manager Forest Edition automates the manual tasks involved in a forest recovery, remotely quarantines corrupt domain controllers, and simultaneously restores domain controllers from backup to speed up the overall recovery and restore business operation quickly.
Recovery Manager Forest Edition requires a separate license from Recovery Manager for Active Directory. If you have not purchased the Forest Edition, please contact your Quest Sales Representative for an evaluation license.
Recovery Manager for Active Directory Forest Edition 7.8 provides the following new features:
The following is a list of issues addressed and enhancements implemented in this release of Recovery Manager for Active Directory Forest Edition.
TF00035861
Enhancement: Recovery Manager Forest Edition now supports recovery of Windows
Server 2008-based DCs from backup.
TF00035862
Enhancement: Recovery Manager Forest Edition now supports recovery of Windows
Server 2008-based DCs by reinstalling Active Directory on these DCs.
TF00036751
Enhancement: Recovery Manager Forest Edition now supports recovery of read-only
Windows Server 2008-based DCs by reinstalling Active Directory on these DCs.
TF00037963
Enhancement: The test operation performed on a forest recovery project now
enables you to check whether or not external DNS server specified for a DC in
the project is accessible.
TF00004321
Enhancement: When started, the Forest Recovery console now prompts you to resume
the last forest recovery operation if that operation has not been completed.
TF00037951
Fixed: A DC recovery may fail with the "There is no valid DNS server" error
despite the DNS server you specified explicitly is readily available. The
problem occurs because the DNS dependency resolution engine built in the Forest
Recovery console may ignore the explicitly specified DNS servers.
TF00035423
Fixed: After you restart of DC, the Recovery Agent may fail to activate. In this
case, if you try to recover AD using the dcpromo option, the operation fails.
TF00027877
Fixed: Forest recovery fails in a situation where you use the following steps:
1. Restore one DC in each domain in the forest from a trusted backup.
2. Use the
Active Directory Installation Wizard (Dcpromo.exe) to reinstall Active Directory
on all other DCs in the forest.
TF00018137
Fixed: Forest recovery operation may fail in a situation where you restore DC
that hosts DNS by reinstalling Active Directory on that DC.
TF00027874
Fixed: Forest recovery operation may fail, returning "Error: The Active
Directory reinstallation has failed. Details: Unspecified error." This problem
occurs in a situation where you use these steps to recover the forest:
1.
Restore one DC from backup for each domain.
2. Reinstall Active Directory on all
other DCs.
TF00004814
Fixed: Forest recovery operation may not finish in a situation where automatic
installation of Forest Recovery Agent fails on some of DCs in the recovery
project. This problem occurs after restoration from backup is completed and DCs
have been rebooted into normal mode.
TF00038956
Fixed: Forest recovery operation may unexpectedly time out. This problem occurs
if you use a large (2+ GB) backup that is not located on the local drive of the
DC you attempt to recover.
TF00028143, TF00027871
Fixed: If you retry to recover a DC by reinstalling Active Directory after the
previous recovery attempt failed, the operation fails at the demotion stage with
the "The system cannot find the file specified" error message.
TF00037506
Fixed: If you try to recover a domain controller by reinstalling Active
Directory and both the names and passwords for the domain account and the DSRM
account are different, then the recovery operation fails with the "Access is
denied" error just after the demotion of Active Directory.
TF00011712
Fixed: In a situation where the recovery of forest root domain has failed, the
Forest Recovery console never displays any information about such failure before
the post-recovery operation begins.
TF00004153
Fixed: In the situation where the Forest Recovery agent cannot access a backup
due to insufficient rights to access the backup location, the Forest Recovery
console displays an error message that does not properly describe the error
condition.
TF00028157, TF00027986
Fixed: Recovery Manager Forest Edition may fail to recover a DC running a 64-bit
version of Windows by reinstalling Active Directory on that DC.
TF00037840
Fixed: Running the test operation on a DC may have the following unexpected
result: Forest Recovery Agent is installed on that DC. In such situation, the
Forest Recovery console user is not informed by any means about the Forest
Recovery Agent deployment.
TF00039458
Fixed: Some backup scheduled tasks may become corrupted, after you upgrade
Recovery Manager for Active Directory to Recovery Manager for Active
Directory Forest Edition. This is because Recovery Manager for Active Directory
Forest Edition places its executive files in its installation folder which is
different from the installation folder of Recovery Manager for Active Directory
which renders the paths in the backup scheduled tasks incorrect.
TF00035271
Fixed: The Forest Recovery Agent installation may fail when started from the
autorun window.
TF00026415, TF00019231
Fixed: The Forest Recovery console fails to display any warning in a situation
where forest recovery has just finished and you attempt to rerun recovery
operation on the same project. If you rerun recovery operation on the same
project, you lose the result of the last recovery operation.
TF00039011
Fixed: The Forest Recovery console may fail to open in a situation where the "System
cryptography: Use FIPS compliant algorithms for encryption, hashing, and signing"
security setting is enabled on the Recovery Manager Forest Edition computer.
TF00028136
Fixed: The Forest Recovery console may provide incorrect information under "Backup
information": Instead of displaying information about the backup you have
selected, the Forest Recovery console shows information about some different
backup.
TF00038290
Fixed: The Forest Recovery may ignore the DNS server name explicitly specified
by user, if try to restore a domain controller from a backup that resides on a
network share whose name cannot be resolved because the preferable DNS server is
not available.
TF00026429, TF00019230
Fixed: The name of the Finalize button in the Forest Recovery console
incorrectly describes the function this button performs: In fact, this button
does not finalize the entire forest recovery operation. Rather, this button
finalizes the restoration from backups phase and initiates the Active Directory
reinstallation phase.
TF00035686
Fixed: The Recovery Agent is not reinstalled during forest recovery process,
even if you select to force recovery of the Recovery Agent.
TF00035427
Fixed: The recovery process using the dcpromo option may fail with an
unspecified error.
TF00036746
Fixed: Typos in DC log messages.
TF00028115
Fixed: Usability issue: Information about DC configuration problems is presented
in the Forest Recovery console in a non-intuitive and inconvenient way. To view
a summary of configuration problems for a DC, you have to point to exclamation
sign next to this DC under "Project Settings."
TF00026430, TF00006659
Fixed: When configuring a forest recovery project, you may encounter the
following problem: For the recovery operation, the Forest Recovery console
selects backups that were created later than the date specified in the "Use
backups taken before" field under "Project Settings" in the console.
TF00037342
Fixed: When trying to open an existing Forest Recovery project in the Forest
Recovery console, you may encounter the incorrect caption - "Set the Project
Password" - in the password request dialog box.
TF00035263
Fixed: When you attempt to install Recovery Manager Forest Edition using the
installation package downloaded from the Recovery Manager Forest Edition Web
site, the installation may fail, returning "Error creating process <process name>.
Reason: The system cannot find the file specified."
TF00037380
Fixed: When you retry to recover a domain controller by reinstalling Active
Directory, the recovery fails with the "RPC server is unavailable" error.
TF00004103
Fixed: When you run the test operation on a forest recovery project, the test
operation may fail, returning "Failed to start the recovery operation. The given
key was not present in the dictionary."
TF00028102
Fixed: You may encounter an error message when you try to perform project test
after updating the project with changes in Active Directory.
TF00027955
Fixed: You may face the following issue after the forest recovery operation is
completed: System performance could degrade and the FRConsole.exe process may
consume a high percentage of CPU resources.
TF00018431
Enhancement: It is now possible to perform an online restore operation in a
situation where Microsoft SQL Server is unavailable.
TF00036772
Enhancement: Now Recovery Manager is supplied with the "Get-RMSession" cmdlet
that allows you to manage sessions.
TF00036764
Enhancement: Now Recovery Manager is supplied with the "Set-RMCollection" cmdlet
that allows you to manage the most important collection properties.

TF00004177
The report created with the DcDiag.exe tool contains
information about problems detected in the forest even
though the forest was successfully recovered.
WORKAROUND
Try to restart the DcDiag.exe tool later.
TF00004189
With the "Ensure Forest Recovery Agent is deployed" option selected on a Computer
Collection, the Recovery Manager console may display a message box upon creating
a backup for that Computer Collection. The backup creation process is paused
until you click OK in the message box. This problem occurs if another instance
of Recovery Manager is running on the domain controller for which the backup is
being created.
WORKAROUND
Click OK in the message box to resume the backup creation process.
TF00006670
In some rare conditions, the restore of some domain controllers may fail with
the following error message: "Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT:
0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))." Retrying the restore operation for a failed
domain controller also results in the "Access is denied" error.
WORKAROUND
There is no workaround for this issue.
TF00010754
When an error occurs during a test or recovery operation, the Forest Recovery
console may display inconsistent descriptions for the error: The error
description displayed in the Status column on the "Plain View" tab under "Project
Settings" differs from the description that is displayed under "Domain Controller
Recovery Progress".
WORKAROUND
Disregard the error description on the "Plain View" tab. Refer to the error
description that is displayed under "Domain Controller Recovery Progress".
TF00011186
The Setup program displays a warning message in any of the following scenarios:
- You run Recovery Manager for Active Directory Forest Edition Setup on a
computer where Recovery Manager Backup Agent for Active Directory is installed.
- You run Recovery Manager Backup Agent for Active Directory Setup on a computer
where Recovery Manager for Active Directory Forest Edition is installed.
Message text: "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this
package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2711."
WORKAROUND
Disregard the warning message. Click OK in the warning message box to continue.
TF00012063
When Active Directory replication is disabled in the Forest Recovery console,
the replication operation may still occur in some rare conditions while the
forest recovery operation is in progress. This problem occurs if the replication
operation is forced manually or by an application.
WORKAROUND
Ensure that Active Directory replication is not forced by any means until the
forest recovery operation is complete.
TF00018500
In some rare conditions, when you recover the same forest two times in a row and
then start the Active Directory replication operation, you may encounter the "The
RPC server is unavailable" error. This problem occurs when you initiate the
Active Directory replication operation on a domain controller that was restored
from a backup.
WORKAROUND
Use the Active Directory Sites and Services tool to manually remove and then
re-create the failed connections on the domain controller on which you initiated
the replication operation.
