Welcome to Quest Storage Suite

Welcome to Quest Storage Suite

Quest Storage Suite is comprised of two integrated products:

Quest® Storage Manager for Windows®

Quest® Storage Manager for Windows® provides a full-featured solution for storage planning and ongoing data administration. Quest Storage Manager for Windows can help you evaluate your existing data storage, prioritize consolidation requirements, and identify areas where pre-migration disk cleanup activities may be required.

Two key components, Storage Analyzer and Storage Actions, work together to support detailed storage assessment and data administrative activities.

The Storage Analyzer component allows you to gather data from selected servers, volumes, and domains for use in Storage Analyzer Web Reports. These reports can be used to identify wasted space, to evaluate servers with the fastest growing storage demands, and to locate the largest shares, volumes, and file types in your network.

The Storage Actions component automates commonly performed data management tasks, even allowing them to run as an unattended background process. You can build Storage Actions to automate the tasks to move, delete, tombstone, run applications on, and set ownership and attributes on the files in your network. Filters allow you to refine data collection to include only the files on which an action should be performed.

Quest® Storage Consolidator for Windows®

Quest® Storage Consolidator for Windows® is a scalable server consolidation tool that migrates Windows®-based data and data security across partitions, computers, domains, and forests. This includes the migration of files, folders, shares, security, local groups and their memberships. Quest Storage Suite supports Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 platforms running on any computer within an enterprise.

Quest Storage Consolidator for Windows comprises three key components to provide an end-to-end consolidation and migration solution:

Quest Storage Consolidator for Windows is frequently used to upgrade servers efficiently during Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 deployment projects, or as part of server consolidation projects involving Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices and Storage Area Networks (SANs).

The Storage Migrator component migrates Windows®-based data and data security across partitions, computers, domains, and forests. The Printer Migrator component consolidates printers onto supported devices. The Update Utilities can be used to update desktop shortcuts, OLE and hyperlinks in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, drive mappings, printer connections, and home directory profile paths.

Known Issues

The following is a list of issues known to exist at the time of Quest Storage Suite 6.2 release:

Feature

Known Issue

Change Request

Storage Analyzer
When hosted on a Windows 2000 Server, DFS Roots fail to enumerate. Storage Analyzer will not collect DFS information for a Windows 2003 platform.

CR#0210431

Alerts are not removed when the database maintenance is run. When you run the database maintenance job to purge old data for storage analysis, any alerts that were logged are not deleted. CR#0200945
Exported data may not match graph data. If you scan a server with multiple logical drives and export a report that contains the graph, the exported data may not match the displayed graph data. Data in tables is exported correctly. CR#0200947
Security error when accessing newly installed Web Reports. This error can occur in configurations where Web Reports has just been installed on Windows Server 2003, or if the SQL Server hosting the Storage Analyzer database is using Windows Server 2003. After the Web Reports installation is initially completed and you try to view Storage Analyzer Web Reports, you may see one of the following messages:
  • A 'Connect To <server>' pop-up dialog prompts for username and password.
  • A general error is displayed: "You are not authorized to access this application. Please contact your application administrator to add your user to the Web Reports security group".
  • Unable to open database connection. (0x80004005: Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server Connection), Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Data Source=con2003ms-ts;Inital Catalog=SAT;Trusted_Connection-Yes;
To resolve this issue, log off from then log on to the IIS Server.
CR#0200950
Cross-language CSV subscription or export can incorrectly parse decimal values. This issue occurs if you are using Storage Analyzer Web Reports on a German or French platform, export to CSV file format or send a subscription as a CSV attachment, and then open the CSV file in Excel on an English platform. On the English platform, the commas used to denote decimal values are incorrectly used to separate the numbers into columns. This is not an issue if all the computers have the same regional settings for language. CR#0200953
Web Reports multiple page report "last page" displays as a blank page. If you are viewing a report with multiple pages and click the "last page" icon (double arrows) on the filter bar at the bottom of the report, the report displays a blank page. At this point you can view the last page by clicking the "previous" icon (left arrow) and then the "next" icon (left arrow). CR#0200955
Export for scripts button on exported HTML report is not functional. If you export a report's contents to HTML format, the Export for scripts button appears on the exported HTML file but is not functional. CR#0200957
EMC Devices incorrectly report the volume name and the available, used, and free space on a server. EMC storage devices incorrectly report the size of available, used, and free space on a server. The value is always reported as a small amount of space (typically 126 MB). Volume names are also incorrectly reported. However, the reported values that are shown in Size (MB) and Size on Disk (MB) columns are accurate and can be used for determining storage usage. CR#0200975
Must maintain the same web site for Web Reports. If you are upgrading from a previous version to Quest Storage Suite 6.2, you must install the Storage Analyzer Web Reports to the same web site as the previous version of Web Reports. If you select a different web site when installing Storage Analyzer Web Reports 6.2, the Storage Analyzer virtual directory is duplicated. This can lead to errors when Web Reports connects to the site. CR#0200979
If a non-default web site has assigned an IP address, port numbers may be incorrect. If you install the Storage Analyzer Web Reports component using a non-default web site, and the web site has a specific IP Address (instead of using the All Unassigned parameter), the port number is set to 80. If the port number should not be 80, you can set the port number to the correct number in Quest Storage Manager for Windows. Use the following steps:
  • Select Tools | Storage Analyzer Options.
  • Click the Server Management tab.
  • Enter the correct port number in the Port box and click Apply.
Note: The port number is set correctly for non-default web sites that do not have a specific IP Address.
CR#0200980
If Storage Analyzer scans with the "Gather Duplicate File Info" option selected, the option cannot be cancelled by right-clicking one of the server scans and selecting Stop from the Storage Analyzer Statistic dialog box. To stop Storage Analyzer scans with the "Gather Duplicate File Info" option selected, stop the whole scan job from the main console. CR#0200937
Server Details Web Report is missing information on some platforms. The Server Details report does not provide CPU speed or page file space information for servers running on Windows NT 3.51 or Digital FX!32 on Alpha NT 4 platforms. Also, NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices that emulate the Windows operating system do not provide operating system metrics (such as CPU speed, services running, page file space, and BIOS version) so this information is not reported for these devices. CR#0200982
If detailed information is not collected, details can be reported as 0.If a scan does not gather certain information from a server because of the level of scan you specified, reports can show the missing details as 0 instead of NA or “blank”. CR#0200983
If files do not have a creation data, reports show file creation as 1980. If there are files on a server, such as some system files, that do not contain a creation date in their properties, Storage Analyzer Web Reports display the file creation date as 1980. CR#0200984
Some information in Server Details Web Reports, such as Bios Version, Powered on days, and # Home Directories, may not collect when running on 64-bit computers. The Use Quick Collect feature does not deploy on 64-bit computers. CR#0215162
Some information in Server Details Web Reports, such as Bios Version, Powered on days, and # Home Directories, may not collect when running on Microsoft Vista. The Use Quick Collect feature does not deploy on Microsoft Vista. CR#0214114
Storage Analyzer will traverse the directory tree recursively to gather file and folder information. The exception is that Storage Analyzer will not traverse (i.e. will not collect information) for Reparse Points such as Junction Points, Mount Points and Links. These Reparse Points are skipped over. CR#0214110
If you select File Details (Attributes) or Files from the Datasource page and ServerId from the Fields page when you are creating a custom Web Report, either an error or an unhandled exception is generated. To workaround, select Server Name, instead of ServerId, from the Fields page. CR#0209829
The File Details by User Web Report (located in File Reports - Summary) displays the data as a sum of sizes for each Extension by Server instead of just by Extension. CR#0208388
When the "Maintain target data if newer" option and the "Always Apply" attributes are selected, Quest Storage Suite updates the "Modified Date" of the target file with the "Modified Date" of the source file, although the "Modified Date" of the target file should not change. The target attributes update correctly. CR#0201512
Installation fails when running you install Quest Storage Suite using the "Install MSDE" option on a Windows 2000 server. To workaround, manually install MSDE before installing Quest Storage Suite. CR#0218216
If you have selected File Filtering for Storage Analysis, the number of files and/or folders displayed represents the number of files and/or folders matching the email file filter when in Quick Collect mode only. CR#0216047
Storage Migration Migration statistics may not display information on Windows XP SP2 client. If you are viewing a migration from a client installation on a computer running Windows XP (SP2), migration statistics do not appear to be updated unless Quest Storage Suite has been added to the exceptions list in the Windows Firewall settings. For more details, see the Quest Storage Suite Quick Start Guide. CR#0200985
Duplicate folder issue. If a root folder is a duplicate on the target computer and migration option "Do not copy" is selected, Quest Storage Consolidator for Windows does not copy the root folder. However, if this root folder has subfolders, the security settings on these migrated subfolders may not be correct. CR#0200986
Product and operating system installed on drive other than C:. If you need to install Quest Storage Suite as a database server on a drive other than C: and the operating system is also installed on another drive, please contact Quest Technical Support. When you deploy agents, be aware that the default deployment drive for migration agents is the same as the current installation drive. This may not be appropriate for all servers. Review the path in the Agent Deployment Wizard before deploying agents. CR#0200987
Procomm Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices may fail to be licensed with a Real License. Quest Storage Suite cannot deploy a Real License to a Procomm NAS device because Quest Storage Suite is unable to create the license file in the ADMIN$ share. Contact Quest Technical Support for information about working with Procomm devices. CR#0200989
Printer Migration While using Printer Migration to check security rights, permissions were such that a domain admin with a nested group was denied access.

To workaround, add an account and set the permissions directly to a domain admin group, not via a nested group.
CR#0197373
Running multiple instances of Printer Migration is not recommended. Quest Storage Consolidator for Windows does not prevent a user from running multiple copies of Printer Migrator on a computer. As a best practice, we recommend running only one copy of the Printer Migration utility on a particular workstation.

Do not run multiple copies against the same target server simultaneously because during migration, the Printer Migrator performs restarts on the target server. The result is that other Printer Migrators attempting to migrate printers at the same time will fail. when scheduling migrations, plan the scheduled run times so migrations run sequentially.

CR#0200990

Performing a Printer Migration from server on a French operating system to a server on an English operating system yields "Access Denied" message. If you are migrating printers from a server on an English operating system to a server on a French operating system, the migration may fail with the error message "Access Denied".

To workaround, open the properties for each source printers. Select the Security tab. Add the application server logged-in user account (the Storage Suite service account being used to run the Printer Migrator) to the printer's security. Set the account with "Managed Printers" privileges. Rerun the migration.
CR#0200992
Printer spooler occasionally fails to restart. The printer spooler on the target server can occasionally fail to start. If this happens, restart the spooler manually and try the migration again. CR#0200994
LPR names with spaces are not allowed. The Printer Migration utility automatically converts LPR ports into standard TCP/IP ports when it migrates printers from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000. If an existing LPR port has a queue name that contains spaces, the creation of the Standard TCP/IP port fails since spaces are not allowed in the LPR Queue Name. The Printer Migration utility removes all spaces from the name and logs a warning in the Printer Migration report. CR#0200996
During the print migration, separator page files are moved to \system32 by default. For example, if the source machine separator page file is located at C:\Test, during migration, these files move to \system32 (instead of C:\Test) on the target machine. CR#0205431
Update Utilities Microsoft® Office 97 hyperlinks are incorrectly reported in the Link Updater report. When reporting the number of links that were updated for Office 97 documents, the link updater report interprets each segment of a hyperlink separately and reports that more links were updated than actually were updated. The hyperlinks are updated correctly. CR#0200997
NetApp Filer Quest Storage Suite supports only 26 volumes with NetApp filer. CR#0201344

Configuration Tips and Tricks

The following is a list of configuration tips and tricks for Quest Storage Suite 6.2.

Feature

Tip and Trick

Storage Analyzer Windows Server 2003 remote registry service must be enabled. To deploy agents to Windows-powered NAS devices running Windows Server 2003, the Remote Registry service must be enabled. On some NAS devices running Windows Server 2003, the service is disabled by default. Start the service and set it to automatic before you deploy an agent to the device.
Kerberos authentication must be enabled for separate Web Reports installation. When the Storage Analyzer Web Reports component is installed on a separate IIS server than the SQL Server on which the Storage Suite databases are installed, it is important that Kerberos authentication is used for proper connection to the database server.

In some instances, authentication errors may result if Kerberos is not configured properly. The most common error is an access error as follows:
Unable to open database connection (0x80040E4D: Unknown error.) (0x80040114)

To resolve this issue, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 326985 titled How to: Troubleshoot Kerberos-Related Issues in IIS.
Web Reports Subscription error "Access Denied" on Windows 2000 domain controller (DC). If you install Web Reports on a Windows 2000 Server DC with SP4 installed, the subscriptions feature in Storage Analyzer Web Reports may generate an access error. The error appears with the following message: "Server Error in 'iwantest' Application. Access is denied". This occurs because the IWAM account is not granted impersonate user rights for ASP.NET. Web Reports uses ASP.NET 1.1 for the subscription feature.

Solution:
To fix the problem, you can manually assign impersonate a client after authentication rights to the IWAM account. Use the following steps:
1. Click Start.
2. Select Programs | Administrative Tools, and then click Domain Controller Security Policy.
3. Click Security Settings.
4. Click Local Policies, and then click User Rights Assignment.
5. In the right pane, double-click Impersonate a client after authentication.
6. Click Add, and then click Browse.
7. In the Select Users or Groups window, select the IWAM account name, click Add, and then click OK.
8. Click OK, and then click OK again.
9. To enforce an update of computer policy, type the following command at the command line prompt: secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy /enforce
10. At a command prompt, type iisreset.
For more information, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Article 824308.
In rare cases, the JavaScript script engine is not properly upgraded by Internet Explorer 6.0 installer. If this problem occurs, you might receive the following error: "This application requires Javascript version 5.5 or later", even though Internet Explorer 6.0 installer should upgrade the Javascript engine to version 5.5. You can correct this problem by applying all current browser updates, or by applying the following security patch:
JScript 5.6 Security Patch for Windows 2000 and XP (814078).
If you run Storage Analyzer on a computer configured with a Firewall, you must add Quest Storage Suite to the exceptions list in the Firewall settings.

Storage Migration

The agent account must have local logon privileges if deployed to a domain controller. When you deploy agent to DCs, you must ensure that the account used for the agent has Logon Locally rights. Failure to have these rights can cause the agent not to start.
Windows Server 2003 must have Print Server role enabled. On a new installation of Windows Server 2003, a Printer Migration to the server may fail if the Print Server Role is not enabled. You may see the error "Access Denied". Enable the Print Server Role and ensure that there is at least one printer installed on the server. If necessary, you an create a dummy printer to ensure the Print Server Role remains enabled.
Scheduled times does not translate across time zones. Printer scheduled times are not translated into the correct time zone for the target server. If the migrated printers use scheduled times, you must modify them if the target server is in a different time zone from the source server.

NetApp Filer

Every volume on the Filer must have its own drive letter share like C$, D$, E$, and so on. Also, no drive letter share should be set to just \. Otherwise, some shares will be incorrectly reported as containing zero files and zero bytes of data as you are observing.

Any volume needs to have, at least, a dollar sign share.. "D$" share.

For example:

Path Share

\vol\vol0\ -> C$

\vol\test\ -> D$
\vol\test\ -> test

\vol\user\ -> E$
\vol\user\ -> user

\vol\user\toys\ -> toys

\vol\vol0 can have just the C$ share. But, \vol\user cannot have just the user share. The Toys directory does not need a dollar sign share as its parent folder already does.

Getting Started

Contents of the Release Package

The Quest Storage Suite 6.2 release package contains the following products:

The Quest Storage Suite 6.2 release package contains the following documentation, including:

Installation Instructions

MSDE 2000 is provided with Quest Storage Suite 6.2. However, for performance reasons, it is recommended that you install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP3, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2, or Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express SP2. Ensure that your systems meet the minimum requirements outlined above prior to installation of the product.

Complete installation instructions can be found in the Quest Storage Suite Quick Start Guide provided with the product.

Upgrading from Previous Versions

Upgrading Clients and the Application Server

When you run the Quest Storage Suite 6.2 installation package, the installer automatically removes the old application server and adds the new version. All migration information is retained. For clients, you must remove the client and install a new one.

Upgrading a Real License from a Previous Version

Quest Storage Suite 6.2 recognizes real licenses from previous versions that are already deployed. You can use those computers with Quest Storage Suite 6.2 without consuming a new license. Caution: All previously deployed licenses are valid but if you are upgrading from a previously installed Consolidator version, you must register the product with a new Quest Storage Suite 6.2 key to successfully use the product.

To obtain a new license key

  1. Copy the primary.bin file from the existing Quest Consolidator installation directory on the application server (the computer name specified in the activation key).
  2. Send the file to Quest Software mailto:license@quest.com.

Based on the information in the primary.bin file, Quest Software generates an activation key for Quest Storage Suite 6.2 that takes into account the unused real licenses from the previous version of the product.

Upgrading Agents

Quest Storage Consolidator for Windows uses software agents to perform the migration; the scanner agent on the source computer and the replicator agent on the target computer. When you install a new version of the product, you must upgrade the agents that are already installed on servers. If you do not upgrade the agents, the new features and functions of the new product release are not available for use. When you install the new version of the product, you are prompted to upgrade the agents on the servers on which agents are installed. You can also upgrade agents using the following steps.

NOTE: You must be a member of the DMC Admins group to upgrade agents.

  1. Run Quest Storage Suite and ensure that it is version 6.2. (You can check this under Help | About Quest Storage Suite.)
  2. Select Tools | Agents | Upgrade Agents.
  3. Select the server on which you want to upgrade the agent from the list box of installed servers.
  4. Click OK.
  5. View the upgrade progress and click OK when it is complete.

Restoring a Database

If your Storage Suite databases become corrupt because of damaged database files and you do not have a backup copy of your database files, you must restore your Storage Suite databases. Caution: This operation permanently removes the existing database and restores an empty database. If you restore the data migration database, it removes all migrations, previous migration reports and statistics, and details about computers with deployed agents. You must then redeploy agents using the Add Agent Wizard. Redeploying an agent does not affect the deployed licenses count. If you restore the storage analysis database, it removes all the data collected from previous storage analysis scans.

To restore a new data migration database

  1. Run Quest Storage Suite on the application server and stop all migrations that are currently running.
  2. Open a command prompt and change the directory to the Quest Storage Suite installation path. (The default installation path is C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Quest Storage Suite).
  3. Type RESTORE /S <SQLservername> /D CONSOLIDATOR /F and press Enter.

To restore a new storage analysis database

  1. Run Quest Storage Suite on the application server and stop all analyses that are currently running.
  2. Open a command prompt and change the directory to the Quest Storage Suite installation path. (The default installation path is C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Quest Storage Suite\Storage Analyzer).
  3. Type SARestore /S <SQLservername> /D SAT /F and press Enter.
  4. Start Quest Storage Suite. Select Start | Programs | Quest Software | Quest Storage Suite | Quest Storage Suite.
  5. Select Tools | Storage Analyzer Options.
  6. Select the Server Management tab.
  7. Click Browse and navigate to the IIS server you want.
  8. Select the server from the Select a Computer dialog box and click OK. (If needed, enter a different port number in the Port box).
  9. Click Apply.
