Quest® Recovery Manager for Active Directory
Version 7.8.0
Release Notes
April 30, 2008
Welcome to Quest Recovery Manager for Active Directory
Resolved Issues and Enhancements
Recovery Manager for Active Directory is a comprehensive, next-generation solution for Active Directory protection and remote disaster recovery. It simplifies and automates the process of preparing for and recovering from a disaster such as the corruption of directory object data.
Recovery Manager for Active Directory employs advanced technologies to minimize the downtime caused by the corruption or improper modification of Active Directory and Group Policy data. This product allows for automatic backup, and fast, remotely managed recovery of data stored in Active Directory.
Recovery Manager for Active Directory dramatically reduces the time required to restore Active Directory and Group Policy data. This improves the availability of corporate networks and reduces network downtime. Given that the time required to recover Active Directory using a conventional full-backup tool is typically a few hours, Recovery Manager for Active Directory offers huge savings on time, productivity, and administrative overhead.
Recovery Manager for Active Directory 7.8 includes the following new features:

TF00002738
With the option to use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services selected in
the Recovery Manager Installation Wizard, the Setup program presents you with
the following warning message despite the fact that the Microsoft Report Viewer
Redistributable 2005 software is not required in this case: "The feature 'Comparison
and Restore Reports' requires the following software: Microsoft Report Viewer
Redistributable 2005."
WORKAROUND
Disregard this message. Click Cancel in the warning message box, and then
proceed with the Installation Wizard.
TF00002777
It may take a significant time for Quest Reports Viewer to open a restore report.
This problem occurs if the report contains information about a large number of
restored objects.
WORKAROUND
Configure Recovery Manager to use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services
instead of Quest Reports Viewer:
1. Open the Add or Remove Programs tool and select the list item representing
Recovery Manager under "Currently installed programs".
2. Click Change and follow the instructions in the Setup Wizard.
3. Click Change on the Change, Repair, or Remove Installation page.

Backup Selection page of the Repair Wizard or the Clone Wizard.
WORKAROUND
Do not backup the System State and the ADAM data in a single session.
TF00003495
You cannot change the Default Backup Storage, the SQL Server name, and the
reporting options using the Add or Remove Programs tool.
WORKAROUND
To change the location for backups, update the "Default Collection" settings as
required.
To change SQL Server name and the reporting options, uninstall and then
reinstall the Reports feature.
TF00003572
In some rare conditions, after creating a large number (100+) of backups of a
given domain controller, you may encounter the following problem: Recovery
Manager fails to create a backup of that domain controller, returning one of the
following error messages:
- "The program has failed to back up DIT Database: The specified server cannot
perform the requested operation. Function 'LdapBind' failed: 'Server Down'
(81)."
- "Error when collecting backlink information. Failed to enumerate forest
partitions. Function 'GetNamingContextDN' failed The server is not operational."
- "Function 'LdapBind' failed: 'Server Down' (81)."
WORKAROUND
Restart the Quest Backup Agent service on the domain controller that is affected
by this problem.
TF00003898
When viewing a report created by the Group Policy Restore Wizard, you encounter
the following problem: Clicking the link "Comparison report does not display some
unsupported settings. To view a list of those settings, refer to Solution 12024"
at the top of the report page opens the home page of the Quest SupportLink Web
site in your Web browser instead of displaying the list of settings.
WORKAROUND
To view Solution 12024, enter your SupportLink username and password on the home
page of the SupportLink Web site, and then click Login. If you do not have a
SupportLink username, click Register on the home page.
TF00003964
With the option to use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services selected in
the Recovery Manager Installation Wizard, you may encounter the following errors:
- "Failed to check availability of the specified SQL Reporting server."
- "The specified SQL Reporting server is not available."
This problem occurs if the user account under which the wizard is running does
not have sufficient rights to access the specified SQL Reporting server.
WORKAROUND
Restart the Installation Wizard under a user account that has sufficient rights
to access the SQL Reporting server.
TF00004164
Incorrect error message: In some rare conditions, Recovery Manager may fail to
create a backup, with the status of the backup session indicating the following
error: "Backup end with error. Failed to install the agent: The RPC server is
unavailable." This message does not properly describe the error condition, and
should read as follows: "Failed to install the backup agent: The specified
domain controller cannot be contacted or access is denied."
WORKAROUND
Verify that the domain controller exists and can be contacted on the network.
Ensure that the backup session is running under a user account with
administrator rights on the domain controller (the administrator rights are
required to install the Backup Agent on the domain controller).
TF00006255
You may experience either of the following problems when using the Group Policy
Restore Wizard to restore Group Policy settings:
Problem 1
The report displayed in the Group Policy Restore Wizard may not include and/or
display incorrect information about some Group Policy settings.
Problem 2
Some Group Policy settings may not be restored.
WORKAROUND
1. Delete the entire Group Policy object whose settings you want to restore from
Active Directory.
2. Use a backup to restore the Group Policy object you deleted in step 1.
TF00006718
An attempt to back up an ADAM host fails with the following error: "Failed to
install the agent: The target computer is busy processing requests started on
the computer '<computer name>'. Please try again later."
This problem occurs in a situation where you attempt to simultaneously back up
an ADAM host and a DC where that ADAM host resides, and specify the ADAM host
and DC by using different name format (for example, use NetBIOS name for the
ADAM host and relative distinguished name for the DC).
WORKAROUND
Use the same name format when specifying the ADAM Host and DC to be backed up.
TF00010757
When cataloging a set of backup files that are protected with the same password,
Recovery Manager prompts you to enter a password for each of the files: once
entered, the password is not reused to open a subsequent file.
WORKAROUND
Contact Quest Support at support@quest.com to request a hotfix that addresses
this issue.
TF00012058
When you attempt for the first time to connect to the forest with a large number
of domain controllers, you may encounter substantial (some tens minutes)
retrieval delay.
WORKAROUND
Wait until operation completes.
TF00026475
When you uninstall Recovery Manager, the
QuestSoftware.RecoveryManager.AD.UI.InstallState file is not deleted.
WORKAROUND
Delete the file manually.
TF00035665
When restoring using the Online Restore Wizard from a backup that contains no
data on group membership, the cross-domain group membership may be lost and the
Online Restore Wizard never issues any warnings about such lost memberships.
WORKAROUND
Check the backup session log for any warnings about the missing group membership.
TF00035690
When restoring using the Online Restore Wizard from a backup that contains no
data on group membership, the cross-domain group membership may be lost and the
Online Restore Wizard never issues any warnings about such lost memberships.
WORKAROUND
Check the backup session log for any warnings about the missing group membership.
TF00036776
Some properties of the Recovery Manager backup tasks may be set incorrectly, if
using the Recovery Manager console. For example, you cannot disable a scheduled
task using the Recovery Manager console.
WORKAROUND
Use the Windows 2008 Task Scheduler to disable the Recovery Manager backup tasks.
TF00036778
Some properties of the Recovery Manager backup tasks may be set incorrectly, if
modified using the native Windows 2008 Task Scheduler.
WORKAROUND
Use the Recovery Manager for Active Directory user interface to schedule backups.
TF00038792
Properties of the following files installed with Recovery Manager fail to
mention that these files are created by Quest Software:
- <Recovery Manager installation folder>\QuestSoftware.RecoveryManager.AD.AutObjects.Interop.dll
- <Recovery Manager installation folder>\QuestSoftware.RecoveryManager.AD.BackupManager.Interop.dll
- <Recovery Manager installation folder>\QuestSoftware.RecoveryManager.AD.ERDisk.Interop.dll
- <Recovery Manager installation folder>\QuestSoftware.RecoveryManager.AD.ErdServer.Interop.dll
- <Recovery Manager installation folder>\QuestSoftware.RecoveryManager.AD.LsaHlp.Interop.dll
To reproduce this problem:
1. Right click any of these files, and click Properties.
2. In the Properties dialog box, go to the Versions tab.
3. Click Company under "Other version information" in the "Item name" column.
The Value field is empty, although it should include the name of the company
(Quest Software).
WORKAROUND
Disregard the fact that properties of these files fail to mention Quest
Software. Indeed, these files are created by Quest Software.
TF00039460
Recovery Manager does not provide the capability to change the default name of
the SQL Server database used to store Recovery Manager data. This may prevent
you from complying with the SQL Server database naming standards accepted in
your organization.
WORKAROUND 1
To change the default SQL Server database name in a scenario where Recovery
Manager is already installed:
CAUTION: Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system.
Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the
computer.
1. On the SQL Server instance used to store Recovery Manager data, locate the
following database:
RecoveryManager-Reporting-<name of the Recovery Manager computer>
2. Rename this database as needed.
3. On the Recovery Manager computer, do the following:
- In the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Quest Software\Quest Recovery Manager for Active
Directory\Setup registry key, modify the SqlDatabaseReporting value data to
replace the SQL Server database name with the one you specified in step 2 of
this procedure.
- In the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Quest Software\Quest Recovery Manager for Active
Directory\DBReporting registry key, modify the DB value data to replace the SQL
Server database name with the one you specified in step 2 of this procedure.
- In the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Quest Software\Quest Recovery Manager for Active
Directory\DBReporting registry key, modify the ConnectionString value data to
replace the SQL Server database name in the "DATABASE=<database name>" substring
with the name you specified in step 2 of this procedure.
WORKAROUND 2
To change the default SQL Server database name when installing Recovery Manager:
- Enter the following syntax at a command prompt to run the Recovery Manager
Setup program:
<Path to the Setup.exe file supplied in the Recovery Manager installation
package>\Setup.exe SQLDatabase="<database name>"
where <database name> is the name you want to assign to the SQL Server database
used to store Recovery Manager data.
TF00040160
Backup operation on a Windows Server 2008-based DC may fail, returning "The
program has failed to back up SYSVOL: The system cannot find the file specified".
This issue occurs when you use the agent method and Backup Agent version 7.7 or
earlier is preinstalled on the target DC.
WORKAROUND
Upgrade Backup Agent to version 7.8 on the target DC.
Recovery Manager for Active Directory version 7.8.0 is upgradeable from version 7.5.x or later. To upgrade, install Recovery Manager on the computer where the earlier version is installed. Setup uninstalls the earlier version, and then installs the new version of Recovery Manager.
During the upgrade process, setup transfers the product configuration to the new installation of Recovery Manager.
For your scheduled backup tasks to work properly after the upgrade, install the new version of Recovery Manager to the folder where the earlier version is installed. This assures seamless operation of all backup creation tasks scheduled in the earlier version. If you install the new version of Recovery Manager to a different folder, the backup creation tasks will still refer to the old installation folder. In this case, you will need to re-configure the tasks using Windows Task Scheduler.
Quest Backup Agent for Active Directory preinstalled on domain controllers is not upgraded automatically during the Recovery Manager upgrade. To upgrade Backup Agent, you must manually install Backup Agent version 7.8.0 on every domain controller where the earlier version is preinstalled.
Before installing Recovery Manager for Active Directory, ensure your system meets the following minimum hardware and software requirements:
| Processor | 450 MHz or higher Intel Pentium-compatible CPU |
| Memory | 128 MB (256 MB recommended) plus 0.5 MB per 1000 objects selected in the wizard, due to the requirements of the Microsoft Extensible Database Engine (ESE). This requirement also applies when you open a directory folder in the wizard. |
