Quest Workspace Asset Manager Discovery Edition (DE) for ChangeBASE offers software discovery, recognition and metering capabilities that allow your organization to significantly reduce the time and costs associated with application migrations.  Asset Manager DE discovers installed applications and compares them against an extensive software catalog, then automatically normalizes and categorizes the software to reduce manual effort.  Additionally, it analyzes application usage so you can pinpoint unused applications that can be retired from use.  Combined with the application compatibility testing and remediation capabilities of ChangeBASE, Asset Manager offers a powerful solution for managing the entire lifecycle of an application migration project – and provides ongoing management to ensure continuous application readiness.

Features

  • Intelligent Software Recognition – Successfully identify and categorize more than 85% of all software found without any manual intervention. The Asset Manager Software DNA Database contains more than 300,000 software packages, including bundles, so that you can even differentiate between editions of common software.
  • Software Normalization and Categorization – Automatically normalize software titles to eliminate redundancy and separate commercial software from freeware, hotfixes, and other categories.
  • Software Identification – If your software isn’t in the Software DNA Database already, you can upload the DNA pattern to us, and we’ll identify it and add it to the next update. This can even be set to happen automatically, keeping you on top of new software coming into your network.
  • Usage Metering – Asset Manager DE’s software metering can track when and how often software is used. Understanding what software is deployed as well as what is actually being used is vital to ensuring only the necessary applications are retained through the migration. Removing unused software can save time and money during the migration, while also reducing licensing and support costs in the future.
  • Inventory from SCCM & Altiris – If you’ve adopted Microsoft SCCM/SMS or Symantec Altiris Deployment Solution, Asset Manager DE will collect the necessary asset information directly from the SCCM or Altiris database, eliminating the need to install Asset Manager DE agents on the desktop. Use existing inventory and usage data from your Microsoft SCCM or Altiris environment directly in Asset Manager DE and benefit from the advanced software recognition, categorization, and reporting capabilities that Asset Manager offers.
  • Active Directory Integration – Asset Manager DE integrates directly with Active Directory, letting you use OU, Group, Site, and User information for assigning applications and computers.

Quest Workspace Asset Manager requires a Microsoft Windows Server host (“Quest Workspace Asset Manager Server”) and a Microsoft SQL database (“Quest Workspace Asset Manager Database”).

While the Quest Workspace Asset Manager Server software requirements are always the same, the Quest Workspace Asset Manager Server hardware requirements and Quest Workspace Asset Manager Database system requirements depend on the environment— i.e., the number of client PCs processed by Asset Manager. We define three types of environments:

  • Small-scale – fewer than 500 client computers
  • Medium-scale – 500 to 5,000 client computers
  • Large-scale – more than 5,000 client computers

The scale of the environment is important because more clients require more disk storage and will put a heavier load on the server running Quest Workspace Asset Manager.

  • MS Windows Server 2003 SP 1 or higher (both x64 and x86 Editions)
  • MS Window Server 2003 R2 (both x64 and x86 Editions)
  • MS Windows Server 2008
  • MS Windows Server 2008 R2
  • IIS-enabled/installed

Small-scale environment (fewer than 500 clients)

Quest Workspace Asset Manager Server hardware

  • 2.0 GHz AMD/Intel CPU or higher
  • 1 GB RAM or more (2 GB is recommended)
  • 500 MB free disk space for installation of .NET and Quest Workspace Asset Manager Server

Database server for data storage

  • Can be installed locally or remotely
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008
  • 2005 Express Edition installer can be found within the Quest Workspace Asset Manager installation package or can be downloaded from www.microsoft.com.
  • Please note that this edition is free and has a limit of 4 GB data storage.
  • Free disk space for data storage (the Quest Workspace Asset Manager Database)
  • 2 MB for each client is recommended
  • For example: 500 clients = 1 GB

Medium-scale environment (from 500 to 5,000 clients)

  • 3.0 GHz AMD/Intel CPU or higher
  • 2 GB RAM or more (3 GB is recommended)
  • 500 MB free disk space for installation of .NET and the Quest Workspace Asset Manager Server

  • Needs to be installed by the customer before starting the Quest Workspace Asset Manager installation

  • Needs to be installed by the customer before starting the Quest Workspace Asset Manager installation
  • Please note that this edition is not for free, but has no limit of data storage
  • Free disk space for data storage (the Quest Workspace Asset Manager Database)
  • 2 MB for each client PC is recommended
  • For example: 10,000 clients = 20 GB
