Foglight for Cross-Platform Database Environments

Monitor Diverse Platforms from One Consolidated View

Ensuring consistent service levels across multi-platform database environments isn't easy when you’re using native or third-party tools. Foglight® for cross-platform databases allows you to consolidate and standardize database performance management across your diverse database environments. By providing deep and complete integration across database platforms, Foglight improves service levels and reduces costs.

Foglight for cross-platform database environments supports Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, and Sybase databases.

Features

Global View – Determine your most critical instance alarms and immediately take action to resolve performance issues across database platforms.

Built-In Intelligence – Understand the health and activity of your enterprise with a variety of integrated management and performance views as well as pop-up advice with correlated workflows.

Adaptive Baselines – Track performance using automatic detection and calculation of normal ranges for all metrics, and receive alerts about deviations from normal activity.

Automatic Instance Discovery – Deploy Foglight capabilities rapidly and painlessly with automatic instance discovery or specific hosts. Manually add instances as needed.

Rich Historical Data – Navigate easily through performance diagnostics and alarm data to resolve recent performance issues from any drill-down screen.

Alarm Workflow – Manage and annotate alarms, set up blackouts, and search for past solutions.

Easy Integration – Integrate Foglight seamlessly with other end-to-end enterprise monitors.

Wait-State Analysis – Diagnose wait statistics to easily determine where waits are occurring and what is causing the event.

Wizard-Driven Installation – Use a powerful wizard to easily install and configure Foglight as a standalone solution or to add database monitoring to your existing infrastructure.

Drag-and-Drop Reporting – Create custom views and reports using the data collected by Foglight.

Sys Reqs

System Requirements

The Foglight Database Cartridges must be installed onto an already running Foglight Management Server, and requires that the Foglight Agent Manager be installed on all the hosts that you want to monitor.
To learn about the system requirements for these components and for information about hardware requirements for specific platforms, refer to the Foglight Release Notes and Foglight System Requirements and Platform Support Guide.

Oracle

Hardware Requirements

It is recommended that customers running large deployments (that is, with more than 50 Oracle instances) should consult with the Foglight for Oracle Managing Oracle Database Systems - Hardware Sizing Guide.

Automatic Grant Scripts

The following objects are created when you run the automatic grant script using the auto discovery process:

  • View to X$ view, named X_QUEST_<view name>
  • Synonym to the X_QUEST_<view name>

SQL Server

Hardware Requirements

Customers running large deployments (above 50 instances) should consult with the Foglight for SQL Server sizing assistant.

Foglight for SQL Server requires WMI access for monitoring Windows Operating system metrics on the various SQL Server dashboards. Ensure that the WMI and Remote Registry services are started prior to creating the agents and throughout the monitoring process. Firewall usage requires taking further steps to ensure connection to WMI, as detailed in the known issues section under Connection to WMI.
