NDS Migrator

Migrate Novell Directory Services to Active Directory

NDS Migrator is a comprehensive solution that accelerates and simplifies migrations from Novell Directory Services to Active Directory. The NDS Migrator central console enables access to all options, both pre- and post-migration, as well as scheduling.

NDS Migrator provides a native view of both your NDS and Active Directory tree for better planning. From complete account, group and organizational unit (OU) migration to file and directory migration and synchronization, NDS Migrator has you covered.

Just released: Version 4.2.2 now includes support for Windows Server 2012, Windows Vista and Windows 7. See release notes for details.

Features

Pre-migration mapping and planning—Avoid migration issues with thorough pre-migration analysis and planning. NDS Migrator offers:

  • Mapping of OUs and objects—Create a mapping of your organizational units (OUs) and objects prior to migration. NDS Migrator will accommodate any necessary restructuring.
  • Resolution of intra-NDS name conflicts— Automatically identify duplicate names within the NDS tree so you can resolve them before you begin the migration to Active Directory. Note: In NDS, it’s common to have objects in different OUs with the same names. In Active Directory, the SAM account name must be unique within the entire target Active Directory domain.
  • Pre-migration file scan—Scan the source and target computers to ensure that all files and folders are valid, verify the appropriate permissions to the target share, and confirm that the target disk has enough free space.

Simplified, flexible migration—Achieve the results you want through the migration itself and avoid the time-consuming cleanup often associated with migration. NDS Migrator makes it easy with:

  • Options for keeping or changing your NDS structure—Re-create your organization’s hierarchical NDS structure in Active Directory or flatten the structure as you migrate.
  • Automated migration of accounts and groups—Change naming conventions and reconfigure OU distribution of accounts without affecting permissions on files or folders. NDS Migrator allows you to include group memberships and synchronizes group members, saving you valuable time and effort.
  • Flexible migration of accounts and groups to Active Directory—Establish an account mapping during user and group migration between the source NDS account and the target Active Directory account. NDS Migrator can establish these mappings in a number of ways, allowing for a high degree of flexibility during the migration process.
  • Automatic resource updating—Automatically update end-user profiles, group membership, NTFS permissions, drive mappings, desktop shortcuts and server-side links in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. This saves valuable time and effort by eliminating the need to visit individual desktops.
  • Scheduled, unattended data movement—Schedule migrations to move data during off-peak hours, freeing your time to attend to tasks that require your administrative expertise. This capability shortens the length of the migration project and reduces overall costs.
  • Monitoring and control—Obtain migration status information for all objects and perform granular undos of migrated objects, if necessary.
  • Secure and accurate migration of data—Protect the confidentiality of your data. NDS Migrator gives you control over file system security and file/folder permission translation, providing the same pre-migration permissions or adding new security principals to help secure your file system. And by providing ongoing synchronization of changes, NDS Migrator helps to ensure that the files and folders in Windows are an exact copy of the files and folders in Novell.
  • ZeroIMPACT on users and the help desk—Ensure a ZeroIMPACT migration by automating updates of end-user desktops; Profiles, mapped drives, desktop shortcuts and server-side links will continue to function during and after the migration. It also provides clean-up options such as removal of the Novell Client from end-user desktops. Administrators need not visit each workstation, and users will need no assistance from the help desk. Faster migration—Accelerate the data movement from NDS to Windows and reduce the overall migration project timeline with NDS Migrator’s multi-threaded copy engine.

Sys Reqs

Before installing NDS Migrator, ensure your system meets the following:

Note: If the NDS Migrator database resides on the same computer as NDS Migrator, the requirements for SQL Server must be met in addition to the following requirements.

Hardware
  • A minimum of 1GHz processor (Recommended 1.5 GHz)
  • A minimum of 512 megabytes of RAM (Recommended 1.0 GB RAM)
  • 500 megabytes of free disk space for the application. This should exist on a local disk drive rather than a network drive. (Recommended 1 GB free space where NDS Migrator is installed)
  • Monitor - Minimum resolution 1024 x 768, High Color
Novell Netware Clients
  • Novell NetWare® Client version 4.91 (Service Pack 2 or later)
  • Novell Client 2 Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 (Workstation Updater target only)
SoftwareSource
The source computer requires Novell NetWare 6.0 Service Pack 5 or 6.5 Service Pack 8 or Open Enterprise Server (OES) 11 Service Pack 1.

Target (for Object and File Migration)

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Server Service Pack 2 or later (32 bit or 64 bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Server Service Pack 2 or later (32 bit or 64 bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or later (32 bit or 64 bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 (64 bit)
  • For file migrations, the target computer must support NT file system (NTFS) including NetApp® filers

NOTE: To migrate Macintosh files from a NetWare source to a Windows file server, a minimum of Windows 2003 Service Pack 2 or later is required on the target computer.

NDS Migrator Console

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Server Service Pack 2 (32 bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Server Service Pack 2 (32 bit)

NOTE: Do not install the NDS Migrator console on a Windows server that came after Windows 2003 R2 as the NetWare Client API is limited and the NDS Migrator console requires the full version.

NOTE: To join workstations to a domain using Workstation Updater, install the NetDom.exe utility as part of Windows Support Tools.

Target (for Workstation Updater)

  • Windows 2003
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or later
