Activity Logging for Backups and Restores in Litespeed

Litespeed has a great feature which tracks all backup and restore activity it does, and presents it within the application so that you can check the history of your Litespeed activity on the SQL Server instance.

This information can be filtered by any specific database within the instance, or viewed at a higher level still, giving you a visual history of backup activity over time on the entire instance.

How do we find this?


If you select the Backup Manager menu, and then choose one of your databases (in this example the ‘RecordCompany’ database, you’ll find the ‘Litespeed Activity’ tab on the right hand side, as shown below:

 

Here, we are presented with all the activity on this particular database over the last week, and crucially if the activity completed successfully, or if there was a failure when the job ran.

This is the default view. The time-frame details can be changed in the ‘Period’ dropdown menu, the activity information in the ‘Report type’ dropdown, and if the activity was done by Litespeed, or natively, in the ‘Source’ dropdown. From this screen it’s also possible to re-run any backup that has been made by right-clicking on the highlighted backup activity and choosing the ‘Re-Execute Backup’ option.

 

For example, if you wanted to find out if any restores had taken place in the last 72 hours, you can select the required information in the dropdown menus, and the results will automatically appear - if there is any activity that meets the criteria. In the example below, we can see that a successful Full Restore took place within the time-frame selected.

 

Another great feature of the Activity window is the timeline, at the bottom of the screen.

This shows the activity which has taken place in the past, and the expected activity for this database in the future. As this database is part of a Maintenance Plan for daily full backups, we can see that there is expected activity for the coming days also.

 

If you click the Server name within the Backup Manager, we can also take the information one level higher to the Instance level, where all these features are still available, but for all databases, as opposed to just the one.

 

Additional information:
There is also a report in the Litespeed Activity screen called 'Restore by Source' which shows the restore activities performed on different SQL Server instances for backups created on the selected SQL Server instance in the tree.

You can click on a database and see all the restores of backups (of that database) on different servers.

For example, if you create a backup for a database, the report will show you all restores of the backup on different servers, including any new database names that are defined. So this way, you can track restores of the backups across your enterprise.

NOTE: The report requires a Central repository and for LiteSpeed to be installed on all servers.
