Oracle Data Guard monitoring with Foglight

There is some new information/capabilites regarding monitoring of Oracle Data Guard environments.

With the latest releases of the Foglight Oracle remote collectors, you may notice Data Guard specific views and alerts included in the userguide. The install guides are still in process but here is some general information to get you up and running with this great new feature.

 

Firstly, feel free to open a support case for assistance until we get the documentation created however here are the basic details...

 

Overview

Basically Oracle Data Guard contains two databases:

  • The primary Database, which is the active (production) database
  • The Standby database into which the data from the Primary database is propagated to.
    The standby database can be opened in Read Only mode, so it can be used for reporting. Running the standby database in reporting mode would ease the load out of the primary (production) database.
    The tablespaces and the monitored schema owner for standby database monitoring, as well as monitored schema objects will be created on primary database and then propagated to the standby database.

This means that the Primary Db will contain both installation sets of objects:
The Primary objects (user, views and synonyms created during granting privileges) and the Standby objects.

Logical standby is also an option to configure the Cartridge with.
The Logical standby, in contrary of the physical standby, remains on open mode. it uses SQL apply instead of Redo apply, as used with physical standby database.

How to configure

Working with Physical standby (Redo Apply)

make sure that the Standby Database is in receiving mode.

sqlplus to the Primary Database as SYS user

create the standby Foglight schema owner

Run granting_permissions.sql (contact support for correct version of script or search for it in your installation directory) for granting privileges to the created standby user, still from primary database.

Switch to read-only mode on standby database and make sure the standby user is available on the standby database

Open a browser (IE, Firefox) and run Auto Discovery wizard

Add a New Instance

Specify the standby database credentials and connection details (the user that was created in step3).

 

Click "Verify Connectivity"

Once Verify Connectivity is completed, next step would be to monitor the Physical standby database.

Working with Logical standby (SQL Apply)

sqlplus to the Logical standby as SYS user

create the standby Foglight schema owner

Open a browser (IE, Firefox) and run Auto Discovery wizard

Continue the Auto-Discovery process as usual, using the Logical standby user credentials and connection details
Once Verify Connectivity is completed, next step would be to monitor the Logical standby database.
