What's New in LiteSpeed for SQL Server 8.2

From April 15, 2016

Microsoft Azure Blob Storage Support

  • LiteSpeed now fully supports Microsoft Azure Blob Storage as a backup target
  • Supports backing up on-prem SQL Server to Azure or backing up SQL Server VMs in the cloud to Azure
  • LiteSpeed supports both Page and Block Blobs
  • Block blobs have a cost savings of more than 2x over Page blobs
  • Set up your Azure Blob storage accounts in LiteSpeed and then leverage LiteSpeed’s advanced compression, automatic-striping for cloud (more information on this feature below), and Fast Compression to reduce storage costs significantly over native and competing solutions, eliminate the need for on-prem backup storage, and get automatic backup replication in the cloud for disaster recovery

Automatic Striping for Cloud Backup

  • Automatic Striping for Cloud Backup to prevent backups from exceeding the maximum file size limits of the cloud vendor
  • May also improve backup performance for some databases
  • Works on all cloud platforms (Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure)
  • Automatically enabled for new cloud accounts (can be disabled if desired)
  • You can adjust the maximum stripe size as desired
  • DBAs can manually enable this feature for pre-8.2 LiteSpeed cloud account registrations by editing the cloud account in LiteSpeed and selecting the Automatic Striping option

Improved LiteSpeed License Management

  • You can now manage licenses from the Manage SQL Server Registrations dialog
  • You can view a license, edit a license, remove a license, and manage multiple licenses at a time

Amazon S3 Improvements

  • Added support for the new AWS Amazon S3 Standard - Infrequent Access Storage class – designed for long-term storage that offers the high durability, low latency, and high throughput of Amazon S3 Standard, but is less expensive
  • Added support for the new AWS Asia Pacific – (Seoul) region

Default Cloud Compression Level Change

  • Adjusted the default compression level in teh LiteSpeed Console for cloud backups to level 7 to improve compression, backup and restore performance, and reduce storage costs
  • Existing scripts, jobs, and maintenance plans are unaffected by this change
  • All customers backing up to the cloud should consider increasing the LiteSpeed compression level to improve backup and restore speeds and reduce storage costs. Cost and performance savings can be considerable
  • Consider running the LiteSpeed Backup Analyzer to the cloud to see which compression level makes the most sense for your environment

Other Enhancements

  • Added support for SQL Server 2016 RC0 (the Log Reader is not yet supported on this version)
  • Added support for Windows 10
  • Job Manager - Windows Tasks API versions can now be easily toggled in the LiteSpeed toolbar
  • Dynamic Variables (% variables in LiteSpeed lexicon) are now supported for folder names (there are exceptions for Fast Compression – refer to the User Guide and Help for more information)
  • The Remote Installer now supports Repository Maintenance / Cleanup for LiteSpeed repositories
  • The Backup Analyzer results now show the target type (disk, cloud vendor, TSM)
