BMR

Folks,

Can someone provide a link to a Quest article or Documentation (User or Installation Guide or White paper) on:
- How to burn a Quest BOOT CD ISO image to a bootable USB Flash drive to enable WinPE storage and network and mouse driver injection.
- How to download and inject WinPE drivers into the "Quest BOOT CD for Bare Metal Restore" to properly connect the physical machine to the network.
- How to navigate the Rapid Recovery 6.1.2.x Core server interface to restore to a physical machine running on the BMR BOOT CD from a Recovery Point.
- How to remove/format/delete a boot partition before performing a recovery test to prove that the BMR Recovery process works as documented.
These are the issues we had in getting our recovery testing to work successfully and consistently.

Can you please provide links or references to material that provides these instructions or walkthroughs or procedures? We've opened the following ticket but no answers on this so far:

Service Request # 4202989

Thanks.

  • Just quickly from memory.

I assume you know how to use the console to generate the rescue iso. Make one and then use Rufus to make a bootable USB from the iso.

Don't worry about drivers for now.

Download your RAID and NIC drivers for the destination server and extract the .inf file for each. Put those .inf files in the "drivers" folder on the bootable USB. You can actually put them anywhere on the USB as you will just browse to them from the recovery console and install them.

On the destination server create your array volumes and partitions. They have to be the same size or larger than the source machine.

Boot the destination machine with the USB. It won't get an IP address until you browse to and load the NIC driver. Write down the IP. It wont see the RAID array until you do the same for the RAID driver.

From your RR server start a BMR. Find your machine by IP and map the volumes.

The booting of the new machine can take some doing but that should get you close. You may have to go back to a USB boot and repair the boot loader but then again you may not.

That's about it in a nutshell.
