Recover AD from Windows 2008 R2 server that will not boot - Using SYSVOL and NTDS folders

Hello,

Our only domain controller / file server, failed this weekend.  There are backups of the volumes, both C (OS drive) and D (Data drive).  However, there are no system state backups.

We would like assistance in creating a backup offline of the Active Directory that lives on the C volume, using Recovery Manager for Active Directory or any other viable method.

We have rebuilt the Windows 2008 R2 domain controller and it is basically a blank slate at this point.

Please advise, thanks!

Best Regards,

Dustin

  • #1. Restore AD. RMAD-FE allows you to backup AD layer (AD/DIT, SYSVOL, SystemState etc...) to restore AD later on the same DC according to MSFT Best Practices and technology (very easy and handy, given complexity of the subject)
#2. Generate BKF for DR. in order to do (#1) you must "prepare" AD for Forest DR project: deploy RMAD-FE, Agents on DCs, configure/generate Backups on scheduled basis. (without #2 you cannot do #1)
#3. RMAD-FE allows to Restore AD and NOT Windows OS level (aka "bare-metal" restore). In case DC failed on OS level, the DC Server must be restored from OS backup by any other solution, and then on top of restored DC Server , you may restore AD (using RMAD, for example, which is very easy and handy)

(*) "bare-metal" restore was on RMAD-FE road map.

  • Unfortunately this will not help our situation. But thanks for the information. We have only a C drive volume of the old domain controller to work with.
  • I described a *supported* scenario.
I suggest to contact RMAD Devs directly or explicitly ask Devs here and wait. Maybe there is some "unsupported ideas" to try in your specific case..
