It was a Sunday night and I really had nothing to do since I had finished playing in my SharePlex lab environment trying out some new features. So I thought I would read Stephen Hawking’s 1966 thesis paper on expanding universes. Why not? Wouldn’t everyone want to do that? I made it past the first page and even a few after that and then, just like the big bang theory, all of a sudden, the pages were filled with functions and formulas that made my eyes water and my brain screamed for release!
Today’s IT environments are as complex as the formulas Stephen Hawking used in his thesis. As a matter of fact, you could most likely use those formulas in today’s IT environments, since they seem to be growing at the same rate. With that growth, though, comes the need for an easier way to get your data from one place to another, whether it be for disaster recovery or reporting.

How does it work?
SharePlex is easy to install, setup and maintain. So much so that many customers tell us they were able to get SharePlex installed and replicating in minutes. In a nutshell, SharePlex captures the transactions from the redo logs on the source system and then applies those transactions to the target system. It is very lightweight with only a small footprint on your server. But don’t mistake a small footprint for small ability. SharePlex is more than capable of replicating data in near real time.
Just like in a universe, you have different galaxies, star systems, planets and so on. Each of these is a unique entity on its own. Your environment is not much different. You have production environments, development environments, reporting environments, disaster recovery environments and so on until we’re back to Stephen Hawking and his expanding universe formulas. From there you can mix and match each individual use case to fit your needs. For example, take the high availability/disaster recovery (HA/DR) use case. In this use case, SharePlex is replicating from your production environment to a copy that will be used for HA/DR. We can take the reporting use case now and move all the reporting off the production database and onto the HA/DR database. By doing this, we have 1. Alleviated possible performance issues of the production database due to reports being run and 2. Realized some ROI on our HA/DR environment, rather than just having it sitting there doing nothing but costing money. I have firsthand knowledge of the savings this type of setup can bring. One of the companies where I worked used this setup. It was a financial institution and nightly reporting was starting to affect the performance of the production database’s batch loading. We were looking into a hardware upgrade to handle the load and it was going to be EXPENSIVE! We already had SharePlex running for our HA/DR database and it came to us: since the HA/DR database was up and always ready to be used, let’s move reporting to it. That simple move saved us from having to do the hardware upgrade for three years.
