What does that icon do? Spotlight on Oracle - Data Guard Diagnostics

I drive my car, pretty much every day. It's reliable, dependable, safe and pretty fun to drive. But in the 8 years that I've owned it and the tens of thousands of miles I've put on it, I've never once used the CD changer and I've also never opened the sunroof.

I know they are there. I even paid extra for them. In my day to day driving I just don't get around to it. I focus on driving from point A to point B.

Software is like that too. There are apps that you use all day, every day. Most of time we focus on just getting our work done - our point A to point B. I'm sure there's some features in there that you've never explored. Features so cool if only you took a moment to give a try.

The other day I had a customer ask me about Data Guard diagnostics with Spotlight. "Sure, Spotlight supports Data Guard." We had a short discussion about it, then they asked, "can you show it to me?"

Oh you know, I never actually clicked on it before.

I know we have it, I know it's there, I usually just tell customers about it and they go "ok, good"  but for whatever reason, I never actually got around to connecting to a database with DG and showing it to someone. Chances are you haven't seen it before.

Spotlight will diagnose issues on both the primary and standby systems. It'll also give you alerts and notifications when metrics fall outside of your thresholds. Here's a list of the canned alerts around Data Guard. It's a quick, at a glance, health check of your system.

Alarm Description
Apply Lag Alarm The Apply Lag is a description of how far the Standby is behind the Primary.
Apply Process Running Alarm This alarm is raised when the Apply Processes have stopped running.
Data Guard Overhead Ratio Alarm  The Data Guard Overhead Ratio Alarm is raised when a high proportion of the Primary's activity time is spent in Data Guard activities.
Data Guard Status Alarm This alarm is raised when Spotlight on Oracle Data Guard has lost contact with the Standby connection (an Oracle database). Spotlight on Oracle Data Guard will attempt to reconnect.
Node Status Alarm  This alarm is raised when Spotlight on Oracle Data Guard has lost contact with the Standby connection (an Oracle RAC). Spotlight on Oracle Data Guard will attempt to reconnect.
Outstanding Logs To Apply Alarm This alarm is raised when an unacceptable number of logs on the Standby are waiting to be processed by the Apply Server.
Outstanding Logs To Ship Alarm

This alarm is raised when an unacceptable number of logs on the Primary are waiting to be shipped through the Archiver to the Standby.

Standby Connection Status Alarm

This alarm is raised when Spotlight on Oracle Data Guard has lost contact with one or more instances of the Oracle RAC (Standby connection). Spotlight on Oracle Data Guard will attempt to reconnect.

Transport Lag Alarm

Keep Transport Lag low so your Recovery Point Objective can be met.

Transport Process Running Alarm

This alarm is raised when the Transport Processes have stopped for some reason.

So I encourage you to take a moment and look up a feature of Spotlight or your other toolsets. I still may never use the CD changer, but the weather has cleared up here in California so I think I'll open the sunroof.
