Completely automates the data search and monitoring of sensitive and Personally Identifiable Information to support businesses’ data protection strategies

ALISO VIEJO, CALIF. – May 15, 2019 – Quest Software, a global systems management, data protection and security software provider, today announced the general availability of Toad® for Oracle - Sensitive Data Protection (SDP) Module. This new add-on module empowers Database Administrators (DBAs) to play a key role in maintaining compliance regulations across the business. With Toad for Oracle SDP, DBAs can quickly and reliably identify and protect sensitive data across the database infrastructure to help their organization mitigate against the risk of non-compliance with data regulations. Toad for Oracle enables DBAs to detect and receive notification of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data residing in databases, select encryption and redaction options immediately after detection, and perform ongoing monitoring to proactively manage databases. With greater visibility and insight into where sensitive data resides, DBAs can maintain stronger security and have greater confidence in meeting compliance regulations and standards.

With the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) now in effect, organizations are taking a closer look at available database management options as they implement regulation strategies to ensure that data stored meets regulation requirements and doesn’t pose a threat to business. The consequence of non-compliance, whether for GDPR or long-standing regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), carry severe financial penalties as well as reputational damage. With these tightening data standards, DBAs are under increased pressure to meet compliance requirements and are on the front lines of securing sensitive data. Toad for Oracle SDP takes an automated approach to help DBAs mitigate the risk of non-compliance, identify where personal data resides across Oracle databases, and apply the appropriate protection techniques.

“Manual methods to identify personal data are ineffective and put companies at risk. When non-compliance penalties for GDPR can cost millions of dollars, companies can’t afford to be non-compliant,” said Venkat Rajaji, VP Product Management of Information Management at Quest Software. “DBAs often spend hours manually searching their databases for potentially sensitive data, and Toad for Oracle SDP completely automates the process to identify sensitive data reliably and quickly. This saves DBAs time and organizations money, while providing peace of mind that the data stored across the database infrastructure meets compliance requirements.”

Designed specifically for Oracle DBAs, Toad for Oracle SDP scans metadata and table data to identify personal and sensitive data, then works with Oracle’s encryption, redaction and auditing technologies to protect data, with capabilities to automate and schedule the identification process. It simplifies and automates tasks related to identifying and protecting sensitive data in the database and, as a result, help DBAs implement effective data protection policies and strategies.

“Data privacy regulations are exposing the important role DBAs play in ensuring data is safe across the business,” said Carl Olofson, Research Vice President of Data Management Software at IDC. “Organizations are striving to adopt Agile processes, but they need to be aware of the impact of such regulations on those processes. Having the necessary tools to help DBAs identify and protect sensitive data across the organizations’ database infrastructure is a critical requirement going forward.”

Key features and user benefits of Toad for Oracle - Sensitive Data Protection include:

  • Sensitive Data Search:
    • Ability to search potentially sensitive data in the database based on a set of pre-defined and customizable rules, which provide search criteria based on common column-naming conventions (metadata) and data content formats (data polling).
    • Export search results into a number of file formats including JSON.
    • Actively address columns that have been identified as containing sensitive data through encryption, redaction or by adding an audit policy.
  • Sensitive Data Awareness:
    • Enables the usage of sensitive data to be flagged to developers as code is written in the Editor or as tables are created and altered.
    • Empowers DBAs to protect data identified by Toad as sensitive, based on search rules specified.
    • Applies data protection measures proactively as database objects are created.
