BMR - handshake failed due to an unexpected packet format

I am working on recovering a linux box hosted on VMware 5.5. Once I managed to get a boot CD with the appropriate drivers, I am now showing an IP address in the Universal Recovery Console. From there I can ping addresses, including my Rapid Recovery server, and I can ping the machine running Universal Recovery Console. I'm running Rapid Recovery version 6.1.3.100. The error I get when I try to connect from the recovery workflow is:

The Rapid Recovery Linux Live DVD instance cannot be reached at '10.161.10.21'. Please, ensure that your target machine has been successfully booted from Live DVD and the specified IP address/authentication key are valid

Exception chain:
The handshake failed due to an unexpected packet format.
The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send.
Call to service method 10.161.10.21:8006/.../fullMetadata PUT failed
The Rapid Recovery Linux Live DVD instance cannot be reached at '10.161.10.21'. Please, ensure that your target machine has been successfully booted from Live DVD and the specified IP address/authentication key are valid

Any suggestions?

  • Sadly, I did not.

  • We apologize you haven't had a reply to this query in the forums, dbell/aspaziani.

Per dbell's statement above, mentioning "appropriate drivers" for the boot CD, it sounds as if the actual Windows BootCD ISO was being used to attempt the Bare Metal Recovery style restore. I'm afraid that, by design, this does not work to restore a Linux system, therefore, the "packet" related error messages during the attempt. Note that the error messaging also mentions "LiveDVD".

To do a bare metal restore for a Linux server (physical or virtual target), the "LiveDVD" must be used instead of the BootCD one can create at the core console. This is not available from the core console. You must download it from either, the License Portal, or the Rapid Recovery downloads page. The process is very much like a Windows BMR in which you boot the machine to be restored from the restore ISO/DVD/USB, and use an IP address and authentication code that it provides to direct the restore from the core console.

  • Our apologies for the reply's delay.

From the mention of "drivers" and "BootCD" above, it sounds as if a linux bare metal restore process is being attempted using the Windows BootCD you can create from the core console (which is only for Windows bare metal restore). The error also mentions the "LiveDVD" which is what a Linux BMR process requires. Steps are very much like a Windows BMR, but it requires the Linux boot ISO one can download from the License Portal or the downloads page. I trust the information below will help.
