eResearch South Australia's mission is to provide advanced computing technologies for researchers in South Australia, and in particular, high performance computing and big data. And recently, a specialist private cloud provision for researchers.
These days, when you think about security, it's on everybody's high priority list. With the cloud environment, that becomes a little trickier. There are a lot of applications and systems that people use and use hosting services to deploy. We have limited control over what people implement around the security and how things are set up.
We need to be able to ensure the security of individual project computing and of the data that we use, because, of course, research is entirely dependent on secure and verifiable data.
We need to be able to monitor and report any suspicious activities and take down any machines which are being compromised. We use the SuperMassive 9600 predominantly due to their security features, as well as the performance. We have identified that the firewall was capable of meeting our actual bandwidth [? triple ?] requirements with the full security features being turned on, which is quite important to secure our cloud resources. We have found that with the Super Massive firewall we can push our internet connection to the limit. If we had gone with another vendor we would have experienced 40% loss in our performance.
SuperMassive is a really good fit for our requirements because we need to be able to grow the cloud, and it'll change over the next few years. Dell provided us with exactly what we need for both today and our future growth.
From the firewall perspective to the networking equipment, there's also the service. We found is quite a complete package for what we're trying to achieve. The service firewalls networking capabilities really compliment each other.
The combination of Dell's SuperMassive and Dell networking has been very powerful for us. It's allowed us to build a private cloud with enormous flexibility to protect our data storage across geographical locations, and we count ourselves very fortunate to be able to put that kind of capability into our installation.
