How to control Advanced Transport Modes used in Rapid Recovery (4038757)

Quest does not provide support for problems that arise from improper modification of the registry. The Windows registry contains information critical to your computer and applications. Make sure you back up the registry before modifying it. For more information on the Windows Registry Editor and how to back up and restore it, refer to Microsoft Article ID 256986 “Description of the Microsoft Windows registry” at Microsoft Support.

1. You can change the transport mode used and the transport mode failover order by editing the following registry keys:
   1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AppRecovery\Core\VSphereService\PreferredTransport
   2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AppRecovery\Core\VSphereService\PreferredTransportForExport
   3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AppRecovery\Core\VSphereService\PreferredTransportForMetadata
      
2. The available options are san, hotadd, nbd, nbdssl
3. By default the registry keys read file:nbdssl:nbd
4. To specify the transport modes and transport mode failover order, edit the the registry key by listing the transport modes in the desired order.
   
5. The transport modes should be separated by a colon. Example: nbd:san

To confirm which transport mode is actually being used, check the AppRecovery.log file.  Search the log for "Actual transport mode".  You will find lines like these below, showing the transport mode in use:

DEBUG 2015-04-18T08:42:59 [617] - Replay.Core.Implementation.VSphere.DiskVolumes.EsxVirtualDiskReaderWriter (DetermineDataToSendTask AgentDisplayName=8.1 VolumeName=\\Hard disk 2\Volume 1)
