• Commercial release of Toad EdgeTm 2.0 toolset streamlines database implementations, development and management across PostgreSQL and EDB PostgresTm platforms
  • Reduces Postgres learning curve and mitigates open source database application development challenges with high performance and functionality

ALISO VIEJO, CALIF. – June 5, 2018 – Quest Software, a global systems management and security software provider, today unveiled the commercial release of Toad EdgeTm 2.0, which adds support for  Postgres. Toad Edge enables developers and database administrators to reduce the time and effort required to develop, manage and maintain Postgres–based open source databases, while ensuring optimal performance. Showcased for the first time this week at Postgres Vision 2018 at Quest booth #5, the addition of PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres support underscores Quest’s ongoing commitment to helping businesses easily adopt leading, next-generation open source platforms.

Open Source Database Environments on the Rise

A recent report estimates that more than 70% of new in-house applications will be developed on an open source database management system (OSDBMS), and 50 percent of existing commercial relational database instances will have been converted or will be in the process of converting to open source by the end of this year. With continued growth of open source systems comes the need for commercially available development and management tooling that helps developers and DBAs implement, manage and build applications within these systems.

Toad Edge is a lightweight, intuitive toolset that makes it easy for database professionals to ramp-up their PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres expertise. This new release comes on the heels of recently added Toad Edge support for MariaDB and MySQL. It equips developer teams and DBAs with the necessary tools to address common challenges associated with OSDBMSs, such as meeting project functionality and scalability requirements, and managing various types of projects with differing timelines and dispersed teams.

Key Toad Edge Features & Functionalities

Unlike native toolsets, Toad Edge mitigates concern of vendor lock-in, reduces operational costs, and ensures data quality and standardization for easy reporting. Key feature/benefits include:

  • Schema Compare Capability - Identify and manage differences and initiate changes in real time with customizable, dynamic schema compare.
  • Object Explorer – Intuitive graphical interface helps database professionals easily interact with their database objects.
  • Object Search – Find any object in the database with simple text, wildcards, multiple values and regular expressions.
  • Toad Edge Jenkins plugin - Achieve continuous database integration within DevOps workflows by automating Database Lifecycle Management tasks from within Jenkins.
  • SQL Worksheet: A SQL writing interface that includes first-rate features, such as Content Assist to suggest keywords and templates, Outline Views to browse object details in context, and SQL recall.
  • SQL Monitor: Displays all internal and user-executed SQL queries, along with execution times and error descriptions.
  • OS flexibility: Supports both Windows and Mac OS X.

According to Mark Yelcick, CTO of OnCourse Systems, “We have been evaluating an Oracle to Postgres migration project across our K-12 student information system.  A key requirement was to identify a commercial IDE for Postgres that would allow our developers to work as productively in a Postgres environment as they do today in an Oracle environment.  We like Toad Edge because it comes from an established vendor, is a well-rounded tool, and supports both PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres Advanced Server.”

“Adding EDB Postgres support to Toad Edge enhances a powerful tool familiar to many enterprise developers and DBAs,” said Kenneth Rugg, Chief Product and Strategy Officer, EnterpriseDB.  “Many of these organizations are migrating off legacy onto open source databases. Combining the Oracle–compatibility features of EDB Postgres and Toad Edge helps enterprises streamline the migration of applications, databases and IT skillsets to open source.”

Ongoing Support for Postgres Environments

Quest is committed to delivering solutions to market that make it easy for developers and DBAs to manage, monitor and replicate from database platforms both on premises and in the cloud.

With Foglight for PostgreSQL, DBAs can quickly and easily detect, diagnose and resolve performance issues, wherever, whenever and however they occur. It features an intuitive web-based dashboard that delivers alerts to potential performance problem areas and a clear enterprise-view that helps optimize the entire physical, virtual and cloud-based PostgreSQL environment.

SharePlex for EDB Postgres makes it easy for database professionals to replicate databases with zero impact and near-zero downtime. With SharePlex, data is continuously replicated from one database server to another, with no scheduling required. It automatically replicates any change in data on the source to the target, allowing the target database to always remain in sync and the data to always be instantly available.

“We see our customers increasingly leverage open source database platforms like PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres, and we’re committed to arming them with the toolset they need that make it easy to develop and manage those open source environments,” said Patrick O’Keeffe, Executive Director, Software Engineering, Quest Software. “The addition of PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres support to Toad EdgeTm further substantiates that commitment.”
