Hello, my name is Robert Pound, and I am a product technologist for Quest. In this video, I will demonstrate how to use the search feature to zero in on specific objects and even text in Toad Edge.
So, we'll start off with a simple search in the Object Explorer. And let me go ahead and search customer. And it has brought back, in this particular database, zero matches. So, if I use a asterisk in front, signaling a wild card, it will actually bring back a few results.
And if we hover over the tool tip, it will let us know the search criteria. You can separate multiple searches with commas. You can use either the asterisk or the question mark as a wild card. And you can also use regular expression in this search box.
So, it's found a couple indexes with customer in the title. A more complex search is in the ribbon bar. So, if we come here, and we've selected the database again. And let me go ahead and search customer one more time.
And it's brought back two columns. So, the additional search here is, we can also look for columns in this dialog box. And if I add the asterisk again, it's going to bring back the foreign keys as well as the functions.
So, from here, if we wanted to narrow in our search and look at just the functions themselves, I could obviously just select function, or I could de-select the ones that are currently popping up. And then if we wanted to take a look at different databases to see where we have duplicates where we don't.
Another handy feature is the text search. So if I come up to the menu at the top, and I select database, I can choose text search. So, then I enter in what I'm actually searching for. In this case, I'm going to search payment. And I will go ahead and do a search. It will bring back a list of results.
And if we look at the menu bar, we can scroll up and down. And as we do, it's going to bring up the actual object itself. So, if I scroll through, it's going to take me to the line where it's currently found payment.
And I can remove from the list anything I choose. So, if this was not what I was searching for, I could select it and then remove it from the list. I can also remove everything. And if I go ahead and click refresh, it will bring it back. It brought back a large list. I can expand and contract everything. And if it was taking a long time, if it was doing an exhaustive search, I could also stop the search from here. And also, I can look at previous searches. So, if I wanted to come back to a different search, I could.
And let's go ahead and go back to the search one more time. Because now, we're going to look for payment-- we're going to look for payment that has a date associated with the same line. So, what this is going to do is, it's going to find the text payment, but it's going to find only the text payment that also contains the underscored date in this case. Let me go ahead and search again. And now it's going to find fewer results from a event function.
And that's all there is to it. Hopefully, this shed some light on how to find what it is you're looking for in the database. For more information on this or other topics, you can check out the help file, which has up-to-date information on the tool and its features.
