How to optimize Hyper-V with Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition

Welcome. Today we're going to look at how Hyper-V can be optimized using Foglight for Virtualization. When we log in to Foglight, we're going to land on the environment overview page. This is going to give us a snapshot into the health across Hyper-V, VMware, as well as OpenStack. It's going to show us our alarms, our virtual machine health, as well as where we can save money by tuning and optimizing our environment. So let's filter this down to Hyper-V. When we're looking at just Hyper-V, we're able to see that there are six VMs with over-allocated CPU resources. So let's go and look at this a little bit more. Optimizer for Hyper-V will allow us to view resource optimizations across CPU and memory, as well as find any waste in our environment that's taking up precious storage space, abandoned VM images is one way, powered off VMs, checkpoints, any potential zombie VMs. If we go down and pay attention to CPU optimization, we can see that this Win10 VM has a recommendation to decrease it's CPU allocation from two to one CPU. Now, within Foglight, we can check a checkbox and decide to either reclaim that now or schedule it to occur at a later date, maybe Saturday morning during an official change outage window. A multitude of changes can be aligned to a simple schedule or you can schedule them all independently. This includes changes across CPU memory, as well as making changes for our waste finding. So what does waste finding look like? So let's check out powered off VMs. In powered off VMs, we're going to see the VM name, the size that VM is taking up on the disk, as well as how long it's been powered off for. If we move onto checkpoints, we have to see the virtual machine, checkpoint size, when it was last modified, and the recommendation that Foglight is making. So here we can see that this 8.1 VM has a total of three independent checkpoints with the saving of 1,020 megabytes.
