Hello, my name is Mathew Phan, In this video, I'll go over some basic concepts and features of Spotlight on Oracle. I'll also walk you through the user interface.
Spotlight on Oracle is a real-time diagnostics and performance analysis solution. It will allow you to quickly troubleshoot your Oracle environment and identify bottlenecks by providing unique visual interface to your database activity. It also has the ability to automatically notify you when it detects issues in your environment.
These are just some of the ways Spotlight will help you deliver dependable database service to your users. Now let's take a tour of a Spotlight on Oracle. This is the Spotlight on Oracle home screen. You can see the Oracle architecture is represented in an easy and intuitive manner, such as the server processes, the SGA, and disk properties.
Also represented is the data flow between these components. These metrics are collected in real time, and the colors represent its current state. You can hover your mouse over them to get a pop-up dialogue to see what it's measuring. You can click on it to get more information.
Spotlight will also suggest what menus you might want to drill into to get even more granular details. So you can have all this information visualized with a couple clicks of the mouse instead of having to run a bunch of scripts. If the metrics start to fall outside of normal thresholds, the colors will turn green to blue, yellow, orange, and then a flashing red to indicate the severity of the situation.
The thresholds of these colors can be customized to your needs by simply right-clicking on them, selecting Metrics, selecting the metric you want to customize, then by going to the Thresholds tab and adjusting the value and color for each of the thresholds. This workflow highlights where in the Oracle database bottlenecks or other issues may be occurring, and this will guide you to the proper pages, rather than you running scripts on your own trying to figure it out yourself. In addition to grabbing your attention with its colorful interface, you can set up automatic alarms and notifications in Spotlight.
You can have Spotlight play a sound on your computer, execute an application or a script to perform an action, or you can have it send out an email to yourself or your team. For example, when the severity reaches a medium level, I'll have it send out an email to all my DBAs. This will greatly improve your service level agreements, as oftentimes you can be notified of an issue before it impacts your users.
