I submitted this request in as a feature enhancement but I was told it has a low priority. Personally I think it would be very good to have an alert (visual and email) to let us know if a query, batch, etc. exceeded a certain time.
So I figured I'd come to the forums and see if anyone else has considered this or has come up with a solution.
If you have come up with a solution, what was it? I'm still digging around in Foglight to see if I can figure anything out but I know there are CME's in Foglight that have way more experience than I do with it.
Thank you for the feedback.
Currently we have other commitments in our roadmap plans with higher priority; however, we will consider your request in future roadmap discussions.
Product Manager for Database Performance Monitoring
we are collecting several metrics which are showing the active time of a query. You can create your own rule based one of these metrics. Depends if you have PI enabled or not, you might have different time metrics: active time, elapsed time, CPU time, ...
This might help:
More details about rule creation etc. is here:
The problem for a general rule is:
Some queries and batches are running long and that is ok (for example batches running during night time doing some kind of maintenance in the database). It might be ok if such a batch/query runs over several seconds or minutes. But other queries need to be fast and you want to get an alarm, when they are running longer than 2-3 seconds. So how can Foglight know now, when to raise an alarm and when not? Foglight does not know if that query runs long by purpose but the other not.
I hope our R&D team will find a solution which is suitable for most customers. As Pini said already, they will discuss this ER and check if and how it can be done.
In the meantime you need to work with a custom rule.
Thanks for the fast response! I very much appreciate it. I will give your suggestions a try and hopefully this will fill the gap that, in my opinion as an end user, is a very big gap! I'll reply back with what I've come up with.
As an end user, Pini, this is a high priority I think and should be bumped up. It's been on our radar for over a year. Any idea when your roadmap will move it up to a higher priority?
