Source and Target UPN the same

Hello,

I will be migrating users from a source child domain to the parent top level domain.  Currently, the source child domain users have their UPN set to the top level (target) domain.  We obviously can't have a user account with the same UPN in the same forest.  how should processing for this be handled?

I was thinking of creating a temporary UPN suffix in the target domain, but i'm not sure if the new staged accounts will utilize that UPN suffix as default when being created.  Also, when activating the users (enabling target, disabling source), we have the option to set the UPN suffix on the target account, but nothing for changing the source account's UPN.  Not sure if this would need to be scripted/changed manually after the fact.

Any insight would be beneficial.

Thanks,

  • When Migration manager for AD is used for an infra-forest migration, the UPN option in the migration session is different then in an inter-forest migration.  There is an option to "Switch" the UPN.

  • Thanks for the reply Jeff.

Unfortunately, i think because the source is already set for the target UPN, the username AND UPN on the target created accounts are blank in the staged environment. When going through and selecting the option to "switch" the UPN, and enable/disable source/target, the UPN never gets switched. All other operations work OK.

I believe i need to make a temporary UPN in the target domain and have the staged accounts use the temporary UPN, then when activating them i can use the real UPN suffix. I've added a new temporary UPN to the parent domain, but it doesn't show up in QMMAD as an option to select during the UPN processing page.

    Thanks,

  • you have added UPN in perent domain but you still need to change users UPN to temp before migrating. you can use DSA.MSC console there is option in GUI to make LDAP  query to search users with some criteria and select all users and go to properties and change the UPN to temp then migrate.
