can't find vranger database tool on Windows server

Hello I may have an odd question.

I just upgraded my vRanger Version to the latest 7.6.4 version. All went good so far.

Additionally, I want now to move my vRanger SQL Database to a new SQL Server based on this article:

https://support.quest.com/vranger/kb/83518/moving-vranger-db-to-another-sql-server-

It tells me this on how to create a new database:

"Create a New DB on the new SQL server
1. Click on Start, Point to Quest Software, and click on vRanger Database"

My question now is:

I don't find the described vRanger database tool on the above location. Can somebody help, how I can start the vRanger database tool?

I run vRanger on a Windows 2012 server.

I'd be grateful for any help.

Thank you.

  • KB is partially outdated. Try to create a new DB through Control Panel | Programs and Features. Pick vRanger, then Change | Modify the installation.
  • Hello Elmar,

If you want to move the database from the SQL express embedded instance, you can take a backup of the DB using SQLCMD (you must be logged in as the same user running the vRanger service) and then you can restore that database to your external SQL instance.

Once you have restored the database, you can do the Control Panel | Program and Features, Modify vRanger installation and pick the external SQL server when it gets to the database configuration. vRanger should detect the database and proceed accordingly. After it completes, you need to open the GUI and enter the password for the vCenter/Hyper-V/Physical agents and the repositories (this is due to the fact that the passwords are encrypted in the SQL instance, even if you restore the DB, you cannot migrate those passwords)

Note that, we do the whole backup/restore process just to keep the settings/jobs. If that is not needed, create a new DB from scratch using the installer and pointing to the new SQL server you want to use. Basically, the DB tool is now integrated into the installer.
  • Hello Andrew and Alexis,

thank you for your replies. Both of you helped me. I wasn't aware about that new feature in the new vRanger version.
Since both of you are vRanger employees, could you please initiate an update of the help section about the database movement?

    Best regards.
