If you’re attending Microsoft Ignite in Orlando, it’s about that time to dive into the MyIgnite Schedule Builder to select the sessions you want to attend.
Here’s one Active Directory best practices session you won’t want to miss!
- Title: Customer story: How to protect and restore Active Directory from malicious or accidental destruction
- Date/Time/Location: Tuesday, Sept. 25 at OCCC W303
- Session Code: BRK2429
- Presenters:
- Neil Flood - Manager, Identity and Access Management, Cargill
- Brian Hymer - Solutions Architect, Quest
In this customer case study presentation, Neil Flood from Cargill joins Brian Hymer from Quest to discuss best practices for Active Directory privileged account auditing and disaster recovery. They will dive deep into a number of topics including (but not limited to):
Top indicators of privileged account misuse
Everyone’s worried about hackers, but insider threats from privileged account misuse are increasingly common today, especially since Active Directory security has lagged behind perimeter security for many organizations. Almost 70% of users get more access than they need, that access is not removed in a timely manner, and it’s hard to track what they’re doing.
If you’re like most organizations, your ideal situation would be to proactively identify suspicious behavior of rogue employees or compromised accounts before damage is done. But about one-third of organizations spend 500 hours per month responding to security alerts, half of which are false positives. This puts your organization at risk because your IT staff likely spends too much time sifting through heaps of audit reports and raw data to find legitimate threats. Pinpointing real insider threats proactively is like finding a needle in a haystack since every discrete user action is audited, creating millions of events per day.
How consistent is this with your experience? How are you addressing the situation? If you don’t have answers, don’t worry! Neil and Brian will discuss key patterns to watch for and how to know what’s a true threat and what’s simply noise.
AD forest disaster recovery
Comprehensive AD backup and recovery capabilities are essential for every organization today. After all, objects get improperly modified or deleted all the time, either maliciously or accidentally. Attributes get overwritten by faulty scripts. Hard drives fail. Databases become corrupted. And natural disasters strike. These modifications can lead to one of the worst nightmares for IT — the loss of an entire AD forest that can take down applications, services, and data across every desktop and server. With so many systems and users relying on AD, even minor downtime can affect the entire enterprise and cost well over $300k per hour, according to Gartner. Therefore, it’s crucial that organizations have a disaster recovery plan to mitigate the risk of unexpected disruption of AD.
In this MS Ignite breakout session, Brian Hymer will run a live demo of an Active Directory forest recovery, and show a step-by-step walk through of how to build a virtual test lab using production data.
Hybrid AD and Azure AD recovery gotchas
Having a solid on-premises solution is necessary, but not sufficient today because organizations are making greater use of cloud-only attributes, Office 365 groups, Azure AD groups, Azure B2B/B2C accounts and other features of the hybrid AD environment to improve user experience. The Azure AD Recycle Bin is a convenient way to restore certain recently deleted objects, but it was never intended to be an enterprise backup and recovery solution. Neil and Brian will surface some key considerations for Azure AD recovery and how to overcome hybrid backup and recovery challenges.
