Foglight for Virtualization: Top 5 Reports You Should be Running (but probably aren't!)

I often find Foglight for Virtualization environments that aren't taking full advantage of all the features of Foglight. One such feature is scheduled reports. Foglight comes with dozens of out-of-the-box reports waiting to be run.

Here is a list of the top 5 reports that you can configure today!

Cluster Capacity Trending
Description: This report shows the projected CPU, memory and network usage values for the next 90 days for each cluster in the service. The projected values are calculated basedon the past 3 months of observed data.
Why you should run it: See trends in CPU and Memory utilization for each cluster in the environment. Know if a resource (CPU or Memory) will be exhausted in the next 90 days.
Best audience: Capacity managers, IT managers, VMware administrators.
Recommended schedule: Weekly - Beginning of the week.

Datastore Capacity Trending
Description: This report shows the capacity trending for each datastore of each ESX host in the service. The projected values are calculated based on the past 3 months of observed data.
Why you should run it: See trends in storage utilization for each datastore. Know if a resource will be exhausted in the next 90 days.
Best audience: Capacity managers, IT managers, VMware administrators.
Recommended schedule: Weekly - Beginning of the week.

Open Snapshots Report
Description: This template can be used to generate a report on all of the open snapshots for each virtual machine in the specified service. Open snapshots are those with no child snapshots.
Why you should run it: Identify open snapshots in your environment.
Best audience: VMware administrators, VM owners.
Recommended schedule: Daily - Beginning of the day.

Virtual Machines CPU Under-allocation
Description: This report lists virtual machines that appear to have under-allocated CPUs based upon usage.
Why you should run it: Identify VMs that are starved for CPU.
Best audience: VMware administrators, VM owners.
Recommended schedule: Daily - Beginning of the day.

VMware Tools Update Required
Description: This template can be used to generate a report that lists virtual machines along with the status of their VMware Tools installation.
Why you should run it: Identify VMs that need VMware tools updated, or don't have VMware tools installed.
Best audience: VMware administrators.
Recommended schedule: Beginning of the month.

To setup any of these reports, navigate to the reports tab within Foglight's VMware dashboard. Click on "Create a Report" and then select the desired report from the drop-down list.
