In a number of different areas, you will notice a reference to ‘services’. What are these and why should I care?
Services could change the way you interact with Foglight. Services are nothing more than a group of objects. You can create static lists of specific objects (something like all the most critical servers, or all the servers in a specific site, etc…), or dynamic lists that are built and maintained based on specific criteria (all servers with SQL in the name, sort by OS, etc...). Now what to do with these services?
These services can be applied to almost all dashboards to help filter data. For Example if you manage multiple sites, you can create services based on location. When you are looking at your dashboards (vmware for example), you can filter everything that is seen based on your sites. Look at everything and only those things that belong to that specific site.
You can apply them to the rules and scope your rules. Create a service of the servers you want to monitor and configure the rule to only apply to those servers, or conversely filter them out instead. Here is a great link that will walk you through this process.
You can also apply them to reports. When reports are run, they will only run with data from your service. If you use dynamic services, reports will be up to date as soon as Foglight is aware of the object because it will automatically be added to the service, and because of that, the report.
