Help Understanding Thresholds for "DBO - Filesystem Estimated Full" Alarm

Hi everyone,

I was trying to set up a notification for the "DBO - Filesystem Estimated Full" alarm in Foglight, expecting to configure thresholds based on file system usage percentage. However, I noticed that the measurement for the thresholds is shown in days, which I don’t fully understand.

Can someone please explain how this threshold in days is calculated or measured? Any clarification or guidance on how this alarm functions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Hi Joy,

The "DBO - Filesystem Estimated Full" rule doesn't not trigger based on a simple usage percentage (e.g., 90% full). Instead, it uses predictive analytics to estimate how long (in days) until the filesystem will be full if recent data growth patterns continue.

Foglight monitors the filesystem over time, tracking how much space is consumed at each collection interval. It computes a growth rate (e.g., MB/day or GB/day) based on historical data, and then using this rate, it predicts when the remaining free space will be exhausted. This is the "estimated days to full".

The caveat is that sometimes a temporary spike (e.g., large batch load) can skew predictions. For example, even if the disk is only 58% used, if recent data growth has been high, Foglight may estimate that it will fill up soon (e.g., 3.33 days) and trigger a warning alarm.

I've created a new KB article 4379771 that explains the rule's functinality in more detail.
