Migration manager for Active directory

Question: windows active directory migration using Migration manager for Active directory

Scenario: Windows active directory forest (windows 2008) having multiple subdomain and tree. Forest Doman name is “company.com” and the sub domain name is NA.Company.com, AP.company.com and so on.

The tree domain name is “tree.com”

Requirement: migrating one tree domain named “tree.com” to different forest with the same domain “tree.com”.

Question: is it possible keep domain dns name and NetBIOS domain same, (source and the target).

Is trust relationship can be created between domains. Migration is possible in this scenario.

  • Question: is it possible keep domain dns name and NetBIOS domain same, (source and the target).

Sure, anything is possible. You would need split brain DNS as well that complicates things further.

What is not possible is creating a forest or direct trust between the two forests/domains with the same FQDN and/or netBIOS name. It just cant be done.

Quest Migration Manager for AD does not support a domain pair with the same name for both the source and target domain. You can (and we have) double hopped the migration to meet this business requirement, but it is not pretty.

Our Binary Tree Migrator Pro for Active Directory can support a direct migration from two forests/domains that have the same FQDN and NetBIOS name.
