How can we migrate from Lotus Notes mailbox to SharePoint, for archival purpose?

Hi,

We have a requirement to find an archival mechanism for Lotus Notes User mailboxes. We are evaluating to migrate the Lotus Notes mailboxes to SharePoint.

1. Would you consider SharePoint as a target platform for Lotus Notes mailbox archival?

2. Can Quest Notes Migrator for SharePoint migrate notes mailboxes to SharePoint?

3. What will be the target destination of migration on SharePoint - List, library?

4. How will this migration look like - for example each email item, calendar item, attchments in mailbox migrated to a SharePoint list?

5. Is there a possiblity of converting each email item to PDF and migrating to SharePoint document library?

6. Can Quest deal with large volume of migration like 16-18 TB?

  • Hello,

Here's my view as a Quest SC. Others may want to add to my thoughts.

First of all: Yes, this is possible and should not pose any problems.
However, it is unusual. Most customers will move most of their Notes (Archive) Mailboxes to Exchange (e.g. the Exchange Online archive), using Quest Migrator for Notes to Exchange (MNE).
What happens frequently is that customers find that some of their mail databases, especially Mail-in dbs, are much better suited to be migrated to SharePoint, because they contain shared information (e.g. project documentation) rather than mail info. These customers will use Migrator for Notes to SharePoint (MNSP) to migrate those databases to SharePoint - this is a common scenario.

There is absolutely no problem migrating a large number of Notes mail databases to SharePoint. You should be aware, however, that the Email functionality in SharePoint is rather limited, so the migrated items will have limited email-functionality.

    Regarding your questions:
    > 1. Would you consider SharePoint as a target platform for Lotus Notes mailbox archival?
    > 2. Can Quest Notes Migrator for SharePoint migrate notes mailboxes to SharePoint?
Yes. MNSP is supported to migrate any database from Notes to SharePoint, and this of course includes a standard db type like Notes mail DB. In fact we ship MNSP source data definitions for Notes mail files with MNSP.

    > 3. What will be the target destination of migration on SharePoint - List, library?
    > 4. How will this migration look like - for example each email item, calendar item, attchments in mailbox migrated to a SharePoint list?
MNSP is _very_ flexible in migration from Notes to SharePoint. We can migrate to lists or DocLibs, creating PDFs, .docx or HTML. Attachments can be embedded or stored as separate items Metadata from the mail con be moved to additional SharePoint columns, or even properties of PDF or .docx files.

    > 5. Is there a possiblity of converting each email item to PDF and migrating to SharePoint document library?
Yes, this is one of the possible options.

    > 6. Can Quest deal with large volume of migration like 16-18 TB?
Yes. Given the amount of data, you probably want to set up a couple of migration machines.
Also the source servers need to be apply to deliver the data at appropriate speed, and also network and target system performance are relevant factors. (Is the target SharePoint o-prem or SharePoint online?)
