Source and target replication - setting different retention policy

Running 6.3

I have a source and target configured at two separate locations with replication. I want to be able to split my recovery points to that my hourly, daily backups are stored on the source, but then my weekly, monthly, yearly are kept at the target. Having trouble wrapping my head around this...Is this how it would be done?
Source Policy:
Keep all recovery points for 3 days.
…and then keep one recovery point per hour for 3 days
…and then keep one recovery point per day for 4 days
…and then keep one recovery point per week for 1 weeks
…and then keep one recovery point per month for 0 months
…and then keep one recovery point per month for 0 year
Target Policy:
Keep all recovery points for 3 days.
…and then keep one recovery point per hour for 3 days
…and then keep one recovery point per day for 4 days
…and then keep one recovery point per week for 3 weeks
…and then keep one recovery point per month for 2 months
…and then keep one recovery point per month for 1 year

Thanks

  • That would work but only you can determine if its what you want. It can be helpful to look at a calendar when you go over retention.

Assuming you do hourly backups (I don't want to try and write out 15 min) and using starting with yesterday for this example

Keep all recovery points for 3 days.

This will have 72 RP's per client and cover the dates 1\12- 1\15

…and then keep one recovery point per hour for 3 days

     Another 72 RP's per client and cover the dates 1\9 - 1-11

…and then keep one recovery point per day for 4 days

This will have 4 RP's per client and cover the dates 1\4- 1\8

…and then keep one recovery point per week for 3 weeks

This will have 3 RP's per client and cover the dates 12/13- 1\3

…and then keep one recovery point per month for 2 months

This will have 2 RP's per client and cover the dates 10/12- 12/12

…and then keep one recovery point per month for 1 year

This will have 12 RP's per client and cover the dates 10/12/2018 - 10/12/2019

I maybe a bit off on the coverage dates but you get the idea

If a user comes to you and says they need a file restored from 8am on Dec 28th, you may not have it depending on how many times it changes that week since you only kept 1 RP for that week
