Order of Pre-migration, migration and post-migration activities

Hello Guys,

I have general query regarding Order of Pre-migration, migration and post-migration activities in Inter-Forest Active Directory Migration. So basically,

Q1: What is correct order of Users, groups (out of Domain Local, Global and Universal), workstations, servers, resource migration by considering ACL and permissions?

Q2: What is the correct order of resource processing by RUM, active directory processing by ADPW (resolving group membership if source user has been added to target Domain Local groups, adding target migrated objects to source Domain Local groups, Security descriptor processing etc.), re-permissioning etc.

Q3: What is the correct order of others and post-migration activities?

Please explain the whole process in correct order.

Thanks,

Mark Henry

Please address and answer migration related question.

    Thanks in advance!

  • You need to have some patience as there is no SLA for replies to a thread. If you are in need a immediate support, please open a support case. However the topic of this thread is not directly product related.

I actually like fielding questions here. It is however not in my job description. I field these in my spare time, after my primary tasks are complete. I will get to your thread, when I have time. I am actually still working, 15 hours and counting. These explanation can take some time.

Please explain the whole process in correct order

Did you know it takes time to write the explanation?

Did you know, that every time you mention me, I get two e-mails? One for posting and one for the mention. I am already alerted to every single post in this forum.

  • Hi Henry,

It's important to note that each migration is different with different business/migration requirements so there is no one order to follow.    Have you reached out to our Services Organization for assistance with your project, since these are purely process related questions and not about the tool's technical funtion?

  • I agree with Chris on this one. Process is dictated by business requirements mapped against the tools functionality to meet those requirements.

Q1: What is correct order of Users, groups (out of Domain Local, Global and Universal), workstations, servers, resource migration by considering ACL and permissions?
    1. Migrate all In Scope directory objects from source to target. This creates a full mapping for resource processing. Objects are users., groups
    2. Process and Move Computers (Servers and Workstations)
    3. Process ADPW as needed if Domain Local groups were used (optional as needed)
    4. Process and Move servers.

That is a rough idea. The application servers are the long pole in the tent controlling who you can migrate when. If the application will not function for a migrated users, you cant migrate them without causing a impact.
