On Demand Migration - Pre-Migration Reporting - New Feature Spotlight

Quest is excited to announce the release of a new feature, which has been requested by many parties, who have been using the On Demand Migration Platform previously. With the release of this feature, Quest is actively supporting its customers and partners, who carry out migration projects with Quest On Demand, outside the scope of the actual migration-phase of a migration project by enabling migration users to gain a bigger picture of the source environment, before entering the migration phase.

In this article, the spotlight will be on the newly added functionality of performing Pre-Migration Reports to help customers and partners alike to gain a better understanding of the source environment and help such tackle the migration process of their workloads across Accounts, Mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams and Groups.

Where can I find this new feature?

To collect your data for the pre-migration reports, Quest has implemented new Statistic Collection Tasks throughout the On Demand Migration workloads.

Once the source objects (such as Users, Mailboxes, OneDrives, SharePoint Sites and Content, Microsoft Teams and Groups) have been discovered within their respective On Demand Migration workload, we can now select a set (or all) of these discovered objects and trigger a new task with the 'Collect Statistics' button in the ribbon of each workload. Since running this task is optional and not a requirement to perform migrations after the initial discovery, not all statistics collected by this new task are displayed in the UI and only exposed within the pre-migration report itself.

A pre-migration report is automatically generated and made available to download, once the Statistics Collection task has completed. The download of this report is available from two separate locations:

  1. directly from the Collect Statistics Task in the respective ODM workload under 'TASKS'
  2. a new link titled "REPORTS" is displayed in the upper section of the ODM migration project dashboard. This link will take the user to a new dashboard, which lists all available reports generated by the different ODM workloads, indicating the workload the report has been generated for, when the report has been created, a download link and an expiration date for when the download link will expire.

What does the report look like?

The downloaded report is an '.xlsx'-file and will list workload specific metadata and statistics of the analysed objects of the source environment.

Each report will include a 'Summary' worksheet, which gives a high-level summary of the workload in question. Overall counts of the workload specific objects, templates in use and sizes. Depending on the workload, further worksheets will break down the different levels of the analysed objects.

For SharePoint, the report will start by displaying statistics and metadata of the source SharePoint sites, navigating down into the webs to breakdown the total counts displayed for the Site Collections, and lastly showcasing list and library specific data.

The pre-migration report for Teams will also include information about the Microsoft Teams Channels and statistics and metadata regarding Groups, which are not associated with a Microsoft Team.

Sneak Peek into more reporting capabilities coming to On Demand Migration

Quests work in support our customers and partners performing migrations with On Demand Migration does not end with the release of Pre-Migration Reports. We are already working on extending the platforms Post-Migration Reporting with the addition of Comparison Reports, to help understand how the source compares to the target environment once a migration activity is completed, and also Migration Summary Reports, which will enable migration users to report on objects to better understand and follow what has actually been performed on specific objects, such as SharePoint Sites, Microsoft Teams and Groups. These reports go hand-in-hand with our already released Error Reporting, Event reporting and Task logging. Stay tuned for more!
