Tablet imaging woes? I get it. They are becoming more and more common as companies offer their employees more flexible options for how and where they get their work done. The problem is Windows tablets — and many other devices — employ the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), which prevents them from using the Preboot eXecution Environment (PXE) to boot a new image from the network.
To get around this issue, many IT pros save an image to a USB drive and manually image each tablet one at a time. In companies with hundreds or thousands of people using tablets, this process can take a little while and really blow your endpoint management resource planning. Perhaps you’ve considered offloading the task to the business units or even individual users? Not a great plan because the process is cumbersome, and nontechnical folks may easily get hung up along the way.
Luckily, IT departments using both the KACE Systems Management Appliance (SMA) and KACE Systems Deployment Appliance (SDA) can take advantage of scripting in the SMA to automate the process of deploying an image to Windows tablets over the network from the SDA. It’s a fantastically simple workaround. You just boot your Windows tablets and other UEFI devices into the KACE SDA Boot Environment (KBE) over the network — without inserting a USB drive or having to operate the tablet manually.
