UDC not immediately showing up in list.

We're still in the trial phase of purchasing Foglight for SQL Server and I've run into an issue using the UDC.

I've created a rather simple UDC just to test it.  Everything passes with green checkmarks, I save my changes and that works fine as well.

But when I go to use my new UDC, it's not in the list.  I've hit the REFRESH icon several times, hit F5 several times, even logged out & in again.  Even tried a different browser!!  Nothing.  My new UDC which was saved successfully is  just not there.

Here's where it get weird.  If I wait till the next day, **BAM!!** my UDC I created yesterday is now there!

Now, I went in Agent Properties --> DB_SQL_SERVER --> DB_SQL_SERVER --> Custom Collection Details  "Enable Custom Collections" from FALSE --> TRUE and that seemed to fix my problem...tempoerarily!!  That worked fine... for 2 days!

Yesterday one of my other DBA's created a new UDC and it did not immediately show up in the list like it did before.  Checked the above settings.  Was still set to TRUE.  That night I restarted the FOGLIGHT service on the server & guess what showed up after I logged in?  Yup, the UDC's that were created that day!!

I'm not sure what's going on but has this happened to anyone else?  If so, how did you get past it?  I'm on the current version of Foglight (v5.7.5.3)  My sales rep is checking with the dev team but thought I'd see what's going on in here to see if anyone else experienced it & what they did to fix it.

Thanks!

  • Hi John

I spoke to one of my colleagues in MS-SQL cartridge escalations. He said this type of problem was investigated earlier and fixed under SSDB-14063.
He mentioned you have an older version of DB – 5.7.5.3. And that you should upgrade to 5.7.5.30 to solve the issue. Download link here support.software.dell.com/.../210660

If after upgrading, you still encounter the same problem, please raise a Support case.

  • Hi there, Gaston!

Thanks for the quick reply! This is great news!! Since we are still in the trial period I am unable to download v5.7.5.30 but I notified my sales rep. Once we've acquired our licenses I will install this new version of Foglight to fix this UDC issue.

Rather odd, silly question. Isn't v5.7.5.3 the same (or assumed?) the same as v5.7.5.30?

    Thanks again!!

    John
  • Hi John

    You are welcome.
What you need to install is a new version of the SQL Server database cartridge (as opposed as Foglight). The 5.7.5.3 seems to have been released in 2015. The 5.7.5.30 is from September 2016.

Feel free to get support involved if you have any problems. You can also reach me at gaston.perez@software.dell.com.

    Regards,

    Gaston.
  • Ironically I left the UDC behind because I never got it to work.
Yesterday I attended Jason Hall' Webex on UDC's and thought I'd give this another go.

Guess what??  It still doesn't work.  And I'm on v5.9.5.10 of the SQL Server Cartridge.  Funny I was able to find my question from 3 years ago & it still doesn't work.  Could someone please investigate this and find a solution to this issue?

I can't be the only one experiencing this issue.  Are there any other end-users out there having this issue too?  If so, please speak up.  You are paying for this product and you should be getting everything you can out of it.

    Thank you.

  • Hi John,

the last weeks I did some UDC testings for another customer and it was working fine. After the query was created and it appeared in the UI.

Please raise an official service request so we can do a proper investigation. Attach the statement you use for the UDC, screenshots and support bundles and we will look at the issue.

I think this will be the best approach - ok?

    Kind Regards

    Nicola
