Upgrade

I assume I am missing something. But how does and enterprise level backup software product not support upgrading a linux client from one version to the next. We are trying to go from 5.4.2 to 6 and have to un-install, then backup and restore the agent id, then (I hope) install, recover the agent id ... then ...

And we have to do this for every agent in the environment ...

Honestly, how does this get released?

  • Hi Emte.

Your post was conveyed to our development team and we got a comprehensive reply. I took the liberty to organize it:

    * The AppAssure Linux 5.4.2 agent has a bug due to which all settings are removed upon uninstall, thus the need to backup and restore the agent id.  This was fixed in the AppAssure 5.4.3 agent software where there is the option to keep settings when uninstalling it.

    *  Linux packages are organized by name (as opposed to Windows packages  which are organized by GUIDs). The rebranding from AppAssure to RapidRecovery, made impossible a direct upgrade. The workaround was to set the RapidRecovery package as incompatible with the AppAssure one. As such, uninstalling the AppAssure agent is a prerequisite for installing the RapidRecovery agent.

    * Our Dev team suggests to open a case with support so they can provide you with a script that backs up the agent id, uninstalls the 5.4.2 Agent software, installs the 6.0.2 Agent software and applies the agent id.

    Hope that this helps.

  • That helps a lot and I thank you Tudor-P  for your time on this.

But Dev/ QE should have caught this way before release. The script/ workaround to this issue should have been both thought out in advance and been clearer in the documentation. I read the install guides before upgrading and none even mentioned this issue. The 6 install did not mention this at all and installed without issue or warning. We only dug into it after the client was red after upgrading. We tried to run the log gathering tool and oddly enough, the log gathering tool mentioned that there were 2 installs now.

The upgrade itself should mention this and not just in passing, it should have stopped the end customer from even upgrading

Also the docs are a mess on this. Below are just a few examples.

    1) The TN below mentions "Uninstalling the AppAssure Agent software on Ubuntu systems" in two sections. I assume one is supposed to be the un-install process for 5.4 and the other is for 6.0 but both link to the same 5.4 process. Very confusing as the un-install process is different from 5.4 to 6

Uninstalling the AppAssure Agent software from a Linux machine

    2) The TN below is titled Upgrading to Rapid Recovery Agent on Ubuntu and is for v6 but never mentions the real process you need to use. It makes it seem like the upgrade is a simple process (as it should be)

I have a case (3620795) open with Support, they have spoken with Dev and Escalations and they say that the information above is not correct and that there is no script

I am not sure who is right, but could you assist them or bring in your Dev contact?

  • Hi Emte,

Thank you for the SR#.  We are looking into it and will continue communicating with you through the SR.
