[MUSIC PLAYING] eResearch South Australia's mission is to provide advanced computing technologies for researchers in South Australia. In particular, high performance computing and big data. And recently, a specialist private cloud provision for researchers.
These days most of research happens as a joint venture or collaboration across many areas, and we need to be able to facilitate data transfers and sharing between various institutions. Most of our clients and customers deal with large amounts of data in the tens of terabytes and the petabytes. Our biggest challenge is really being able to deal with high volumes of data, and being able to move them quite seamlessly.
It became obvious that a normal every day academic network was simply not going to give us the capability of delivering the advanced computing that we need to deliver. We went down the road of the Dell package because it consisted of the three major elements of our cloud. That is service, networking, and firewalls. And the integration was exactly what we needed.
Dell servers are the base of our cloud. They are integral to everything we do for our private research.
Our cloud implementation consists of around about 40 servers. The biggest benefit is really the density and the processing capability, which allows us to host quite a large number of virtual machines and scale out the infrastructure as required.
Before we had the Dell networking equipment, we relied upon a gigabit network which was sub-standard. Throughout our implementation testing, we managed to achieve up to 39 1/2 gigabits per second using link aggregation. Which was quite phenomenal actually. Our network performance has improved by factors of 10. If we had gone with another vendor, we would have experienced 40% loss in our performance.
Dell networking is absolutely integrable to our success in private cloud. Because it gives us the capability of delivering complex computing-- large data storage-- over a large geographical area, and in Australia that is essential for our business.
These days when you think about security, it's on everybody's high priority list. With a cloud environment that becomes a lot trickier.
We have to be able to invite a whole host of different researchers onto the cloud, but we have to keep our security separate from the University corporate systems.
We did our homework across a number of firewall solutions, and we identified SuperMassive as being able to provide the highest performance with all threat management services turned on.
SuperMassive is a really good fit for our requirements because we have a number of different users from a number of different sources who require secure computing and ultra secure data.
From the firewall perspective to the networking equipment, [? as ?] also the servers, we found this as a quite complete package for what we're trying to achieve.
eResearch benefits from a Dell end to end solution, because it allows us to offer researchers more of what they need to do their jobs properly. And that's what our job is.
