Using Zero Clients? How To Connect A Virtual Desktop Scanner To a Remote App, using RemoteScan Enterprise User Edition

With many organizations now upgrading from PCs and Windows Embedded thin clients to zero clients which connect to the cloud, many admins are encountering the new challenge of connecting their users’ document scanners to the zero client virtual desktop. This setup can be especially challenging when the user needs to perform remote desktop scanning into a remote app launched from the user’s virtual desktop. This type of over-network document scanning can be accomplished using RemoteScan Enterprise User Edition.

The following instructions apply to most types of virtual desktop setups (Horizon, Hyper-V, Parallels, XenDesktop):
1.    Install the scanner’s TWAIN driver package on the user’s virtual desktop and make sure the user’s scanner is visible in Devices and Printers (client USB redirection may need to be enabled in the VM admin settings).
2.    Install the RemoteScan Enterprise User Edition server component on the user’s virtual desktop.
3.    Select the scanner(s) or camera(s) you would like to connect to the Remote App. This may be done by right-clicking the RemoteScan tray icon on the user’s virtual desktop, and then choosing the specific devices to connect.
4.    Install the RemoteScan Enterprise User Edition license server component
5.    Install the RemoteScan Enterprise User Edition client component on the server hosting the remote app (RemoteScan Enterprise User Edition installation guide can be found here: www.quest.com/.../remotescan-useredition-installation-support-guide-datasheet-112377.pdf )
6.    In the remote app, select RemoteScan as the scan source

With this set up, the user should now be able to do remote desktop scanning using their zero client into the remote app launched from their virtual desktop.

As always, RemoteScan technical support can assist RemoteScan customers and prospects with configuring RemoteScan.
